One of the reason I love brands like Doxa,Eterna "specially the Super kontiki", Rolex, omega, panerai. Is becouse of their history..

Micro brands like halios, benarus, deep blue and all that shit is becouse they just order their watches from a chink catalog and stamp their name on it.

I posted this earlier but I can't chose at all.
Either a regular Seiko or a replica Rolex.
I dress quite preppy and nobody would think the Rolex is fake at all, but I dislike the fact that it's a replica and it might break easily.
Of course I would add a light brown leather band with both of them.
I dislike the Seiko brand but it's the only thing I can wear since I have a bet going about me not being able to go a month wearing a $100 watch.

a $300 rolex knock off is probably a half decent watch on the inside.

one of the issues with fake watches is that you never know what you're getting on the inside could be a cheap movement, could be a packet of meth

personally i think the gamble is better than the seiko.

1: Seiko - Sealed Box of Junk, 0% chance of getting anything else.

2: Rolex - Mystery Box it could be filled with $100 bills it could be empty 50/50

>> No.9781442

It's ultimately your decision, but the chink movement in a $300 watch will actually be oiled instead of running on sawdust and Chinese children's tears. It's also going to be inherently better just because it's a good ETA design as opposed to a fairly shitty miyota design.

Don't buy a replica. Buy something proud in its own merit and price range. If you are in no position to afford an expensive watch you don't have to, and of course, pretending is niggercore.

For example, I have very expensive watches, as some hwre can tell you, but I also have and appreciate affordable watches and I wear the quite often and I'm happy with them.

Between those two, buy the Seiko.

Lolhistory. Unless you are getting an important historical vintage watch or a modern continuation of one, an early Seiko Chronograph, a Zenith El Primero or a Patek Perpetual Calendar for example, you arent buying into anything more than what a microbrand sells, an generic movement with a case over it. Only exception would be an inhouse movement, but that only comes into play in priceranges far over what most microbrands offer.

It seems like the only current watch that's even close is >>9785488 with the 4 oclock crown and the big sloping lugs that flow into the crown guard. Repostan from the /fa/ thread

So far so good. The dial is gorgeous, plenty of little neat details like the hour disk color change, the 3 layer sandwich dial, the brushed lugs and bezel and polished sides in the case actually following around the bracelet and the colored caseback display crystal. The bracelet is pretty good but
unfortunatly isnt completly solid as it has hollow centerlinks . The PVD coating has survived a couple hits and scrapes unscathed, but the crystal already picked up a little scratch, but that is expected with mineral glass.

Only thing that annoys me is the lack of hacking, which due to my lazyness has prevented me from checking the accuracy exactly. Its probably in the +-8 sec/day range, but cant confirm.

I used to look at Grand Seiko's as some hidden eastern gem that was too good for snobby Swiss watch owners, but I lately I can't help but look at the stuff that Rolex puts out and think that their designs are simply more interesting. Grand Seiko's just seem a little too clean for a watch at that price.

Although I have to admit that there's nothing quite like that textured dial on the snowflake.

>> No.9788010

Well I think the very understated look is part of the appeal. It's very plain at first glance and from a distance it's practically indistinguishable from a plain boring cheap watch, but the closer you get to it and the more you pay attention, the more you start to see the insane attention to detail that was put into the watch and all the care that went into perfecting the simple design. I don't think it's meant to wow people, it's something you wear for your own sake. Nobody else is going to notice how the power reserve is cut deeply into the dial and has 3 different textures on it that are totally different from the main dial texture. They won't know that the case and bracelet are an amazing titanium alloy that has the same bright shine of stainless steel and a scratch-resistant coating because in the end they pull it off so well that it just looks like any other stainless steel. Only you will notice all those details when you're sitting at home jerking off to your watch with a loupe.

I can see the appeal in both types of watch, I guess. Anyone will see a nice shiny sub or dj or GMT or whatever and appreciate that it's an elegant iconic design, and it is.

It is actually no wonder as Rolex´s design is widely recognized even by people who aren´t into watches. I know of a colleage who exchange his expensive one to a Rolex if he deals with people in China as they can allocate it a lot better then other swiss brands.
I don´t think the hommage/copy stance of Steinhart an issue. Peole who don´t know will see a nice watch on your wrist or mistake it for a rolex, and people who are into watches see a timepiece that got all the basics down without wasting a lot of money on branding.
