Why did they even bother putting 6 and 10 on the dial? I think it looks really cheap and I hate it when subdials are evenly spaced around the dial like that, and they're too far apart too. The subdial layout of the speed professional is the most aesthetic for a 3-dial, it's a shame nobody else seems to be able to get the subdial spacing right.

Not that I don't like your watch, but "old-time" watches were definitely thinner than today's watches and thinness was prized.

Then automatics became popular and suddenly everything had to be an automatic and I guess most manufacturers just decided to throw a huge fucking rotor on top of the rest of the movement with no effort to not make the watch twice as thick as a result.

>>9634563
So what's the deal with Zenith anyway? Everyone seems to like their chronos a lot but I don't know much else about the company. I know it's a classic design but personally I think it's a pretty ugly design (sorry lawyerfriend). I also know that it's a big deal that that watch is sort of the first* automatic chronograph and there's a big shitstorm about who was actually first but it definitely wasn't Seiko because theirs wasn't Swiss and it wasn't expensive enough so it doesn't count.

Pic related, I bought it from target in highschool for price, the bashguard, and the simple look. replaced the battery as needed over the next decade but the movement gave out. I beat the fucking hell out of it, though. for sentimental reasons, I'd like to get it running again. the movement has to be cheap af, I'd reckon. I'm handy/mechanically inclined, have tools including tiny screwdrivers but nothing watch-specific. how shall I proceed?

>> No.9636010

>>9635971
Theoretically you could just swap out the entire movement. Knowing cheap as shit quartz watches, you can probably buy a brand new movement for less than $10 online. As for doing the actual replacing, you could do it yourself, but it might not go perfectly. You'd need to pull off the hands, take off the dial, put the dial on the new movement, put the hands back on (making sure you get them properly aligned) and then re-case the whole thing. Again, something you could definitely do yourself, but there's a good chance something might go slightly wrong (scratch the dial, bend or break a hand, etc).

The setting mechanism on a quartz watch is still very similar to a mechanical watch. Even if it was something very different, as long as he gets an identical replacement movement (which he most likely can) there wouldn't be anything to worry about. But seriously, I'm more used to bring my Speedy with me when I travel, but my Zenith performed like a true champ. And since I became fucking demential and actually tried parachute jumping from a plane at Uruguay, my watch felt truly in home. (Not me. I really pissed myself a little LOL, but I'm sure the final push to try this "sport" came from the fact that I was wearing a timpiece specifically designed to jumpers and thoutgh "I'm not going to be like all those bitches that buy Submariners and never even take them to the pool" so I guess I have to thank you Watchmaker, for the opportunity you provided me.) :-)

>>9635160
I have handled this particular model before. The thing I most remeber from it was the sensation of deepness thru all the gilloched "waves" of the dial. So deep that some of the indexes and other elements actually had some space below them where the waves went "down". I liked this particularity but a frien of mine didn't.
Imho ifyou're considering buying one it is imperative to check it in the flesh before exchanging money so you can find if you will like this deepness feature or not. The royal blue color of th watch is beautiful nonetheless.
If you do get it, please post pics here, and ask for a better deal before saying yes. There are not a lot of people currently interested in this old UN models so there is room for negotiations. Cheers.

>>9635218
Zenith is a great brand with a strong history and lots of in-house movements and innovations more reputated brands doesn't have. Historically speaking, the argument between who maked the first automatic chonograph didn't included Seiko, but Zenith El Primero and Dubois-Depraz Chronomatic, Seiko was almost a year later.
Probably you may dislike the design because it's not really intended to office duty, but to more sport related activities so it must look sportier and a bit buff, so it should be more colorful and bold.

Also, high frecuency chronographs are rare to be found and expensive to make. Mine has a 5 hertz frecuency (36,000 vph) and also measures decimals of a second (1/10th) wich is truthfully a realy hard achivement. And, if I bought mine from, say, AP, it would probably coat more than 50 or 60k wich means that Zenith (due to its gigantic infrastructure) delivers a way bigger bang from the money you paid. To my knowledge, the only other brand in this niche is JLC, and that is saying a lot.

yes. was wrong about it being glued on, but you knew that. looking for side screws… nope, nothing. just the ones on top.

I think the circled ones go all the way thru? it's not like I'll ruin the movement any worse if I take 'em off, I guess. there are holes similar to the one with the post detent but there's no levers etc under them when I look in from the side, just flat plastic housing.

should I try to get the hands off? I do this from the dial side or I need to get the movement loose and get them from the back?

It looks like those two screws are holding the coil down. All in all, like you said, you can't really hurt it more, but I wouldn't start unscrewing things. Its also possible that the dial feet just go through two holds and then are bent slightly to keep the dial from coming up. Can you see the dial feet at all from the sides of the movement?

Whatever you do, just go slowly. The worst thing you can do is rush and break something. Google search for watch hand pullers. They grab the hand, right at the center and lever it up. You can try to do the same thing with one or two pairs of tweezers, but juts go slowly. They should hopefully just slide up and off. Just gonna dump random pictures of my own as well.

Interesting, but whatever, you can sort out the crow issue later. As for a replacement movement, there are a few things to consider. Total dimensions: it needs to fit inside the case, obviously. As for where the dial feet are on the movement, it'd be best for the placement to be the same so you can still use the dial feet, but if they're in different spots you can basically cut off the old dial feet and use these little adhesive tabs to stick the new dial directly on to the movement. The post sizes for the hands need to be the same. For example, on an ETA 2824 it goes 1.5mm, 0.9mm, and 0.24mm (if I remember correctly) for the hour, minute, and second hand. If you can find a movement that fits all of those dimensions, then you should be good to go.

That solely depends on your taste and what you want this watch for (at the office, workshop duty, playing sports, etc...) What I can tell you is that if that is your budget and you don't have lots of other watches, you should lurk into Seiko and Citizen and buy somthing from them. Both have great quality control facilities and whatever watch you choose will last for several years without any problems.

It's a super cool watch, but it's 50-60 years old and uses a very unique movement which is completely unlike the vast majority of other watches, so as you can imagine servicing it can be a problem. Buying ordinary vintage watches is already complicated enough. I don't know if that's a great idea for a first watch, I guess you could just go for it but you're going to have to seriously do your homework on that watch to make sure you're buying something decent and you might be in for a lot of trouble if the watch isn't running properly.

It's not accurate at all compared to the price it's at. Stop deluding yourself because you like your watch. It was seriously accurate at the time of making, but now, and I'm guessing yours is probably (even if you deny it) in an unserviced condition, since it's hard to find anyone able to service such an unpopular movement, and don't try to tell me you can do it, be cause you can't.

Holy fuck, lets make a few more accusations. My Accutron is running about 4 seconds fast per day, which isn't good compared to quartz, but there's not really much of anything that can rival quartz. Compared to mechanical, plus 4 seconds in every single position is pretty damn amazing. Also, I haven't serviced my own Accutron but I have worked on other ones that the school had lying around. They're really not that hard to service as long as you've got the tools. Hell, we actually have quite a fair amount of Accutron service equipment at my school, from old tech manuals to original Bulova factory service kits.

Even if it's not serviced, this movements are part of history and deserve their cherished place among vintage collectors wich, incidently, is why they have such pricetags.

I have my own modern Speedmaster and Milgauss, both, technologically speaking, more advanced than the original references, but that doesn't mean I won't aquire the original models eventually, as they are part of my vintage "to shop" list. I'll probably end paying more for them in near mint conditions than for their modern cousins, but I want to own a part of whatchmaking history for myself. The same applies to Accutron's Spaceview.

Well unfortunately I don't think I'm going to be selling my Accutron any time soon. It was a gift from my girlfriend, so obviously there's some emotion behind it. This Girard-Perregaux Gyromatic, on the other hand, I definitely will be selling once I'm done working on it. I usually put stuff on eBay, but no harm offering it here first. It really is a great looking watch, the only problem is that, due to several reasons which I won't bother explaining unless someone actually asks, the power reserve is only like 16 hours. It keeps great time, you just need to wind it every night so it doesn't die in the middle of the night. Other than that, the automatic mechanism keeps it wound fine during the day.

if you can't pop it with a butter knife don't bother

the other guy had the casio g/shock plate

it's just an SS plate with 4 screws and a rubber gasket under that plate that covers the face of the movt

nicer watches have notched threaded cases (seiko/orient/rolex/hublot/ etc)

the snap back cases are reserved usually for timex, or raymond weil tier watches

The other reason mine doesn't look bad is because it has lots of elements to accomodate on the dial and bezel. Being so minimalistic, that Komono watch is going to look like a big black plate on your wrist.

Is the Swiss Industry answer to the awful ugly iShit watch; not only Urwerk has decided to jump on this train: Frederique Constant, Montblanc and Bvlgari presented smartwatches in Basel, couple of weeks ago.

There a big difference, though; apparently, most high end smartwatches from swiss brands will be some sort of hibrids: the telling time "watch" part will stil be mechanic and traditionally made, while the "smart" one will be an easy configurable hardware flexible enough to keep working with further software updates thus, NOT rendering the watch fucking useless within a couple of years. That's the main difference with Apple: true swiss brands will always focus on trascendence rather than shity electronics.

IMHO, that's the way to go with smartwatches. (I still won't buy one, though.)

These quartz Grand Seikos are suddenly really growing on me, the 9F movement actually sounds pretty awesome.

What are some cheaper high quality quartz watches? Are there quartz equivalents to the SARBs? My only experience with quartz has been cheap shit, but I think I would like it a lot better if I had a watch that was just as well made as my mechanicals and with a second hand that actually lands on the indices.

The problem is vintage stuff like that is that you have to know a bunch of shit and do a lot of research to make sure it's in good shape and isn't a frankensteined mess of parts and all that. But fuck it, in any case it looks nice and that sounds like a bretty good price as long as it's running good and has been serviced.

Relume-ing the hands of a watch is relatively easy to do. However, it does lose you some of the original value of the watch as the hands have now been redone. Relume-ing a dial would be a lot more involved and would probably require refinishing the entire dial. Unless the dial is in really terrible shape I don't recommend getting it refinished as original dials are where vintage watches really hold their value.

Just today this watch was launched.
Don't know how to feel about it being a Jacob&Co, tough.

Hysek, Vianney Halter and Maitre du Temps have 3D moons as well, but the reason the DeBethune interests me is more than the moonphase, is the perpetual calendar, the avant garde tourbillon, the elegant caliber construction...

1) I'm pretty sure subs go for well over $6000
2) there's plenty of legitimate reasons to like Rolex, the submariner is a very good watch and it's a classic icon.

Maybe he just bought it to show off, but maybe he didn't. If you're assuming everyone with a Rolex only has it to impress poor people then you're the bitter and pathetic one.

But he does sound like an asshole.

IIII is perfectly valid and is traditionally much more common on watches and clocks than IV. Pic related, the Romans wrote IIII rather than IV on the Colosseum 2000 years ago.

The other I's aren't supposed to be numbers, they're just hour markers.

>> No.9645425

>>9645392
They aren't I's. Just think of them as generic stick markers. They did it that way because the subdials would have cut off the full numerals.
And they use IIII instead of IV because IIII and IV are both valid notations of the roman numeral 4. All watches use IIII.
