Honestly, the vast majority of people in real life don't give a shit what watch you're wearing and won't notice, so I think you'll be fine. It'll probably be under a shirtsleeve most of the time anyway except for when you're looking at it.

It is a little big for a dress watch though, but if you want something smaller then you'll probably have to look into vintage stuff because the trend for several years now has been to make watches really big.

See if the brand is one you've heard good things or bad things about. See what movement is in it. Check if the watch is made by the mountain jews, the nips, the sweatshop chinks, or the former communists. Check if they're lying about where it's actually made. Google it. Check watchuseek. Ask people who may own that watch or something like it from the same brand.

Brand brand brand. With clothes brandfags are usually retarded because most of it's still cheap chink garbage anyway but the brand of a watch tells you everything about its quality.
Well-known established swiss watchmaker? Probably a safe choice. No-name kickstarter brand? Make sure you research what movement is in the watch. You analyze the movement by also looking at the brand and then determining if that movement befits the price point the watch is being sold at. Most of the time, it doesn't, but you get exceptions like Obris Morgan who are selling watches far below the price they'd fetch from somebody else.

You're definitely going to need to see the inside and check the caseback for a model reference number and stuff like that. Once you know that you can look up the model online and see what it's supposed to look like. If the watch is solid gold then there should definitely be some hallmarks stamped on the inside of the caseback which tell you the purity of the gold and where it was made. If it's gold plated or capped then I don't think it necessarily has to have any of that stamped on it.

I don't know a whole lot about Seamasters, I didn't even know ones with moonphases and all that stuff existed, so here goes my uneducated opinion. The T-Swiss Made-T on the bottom means the watch should have tritium lume, seems odd since I don't see where the lume is on the dial. I suppose that black stuff on the hour and minute hands could be really really old crusty lume, but it looks more like the ebony inlays that Omega used a whole bunch on their hands. On a watch that old the tritium lume should be almost dead, but maybe you can very faintly see it in a totally dark room. If you can physically go look at the watch yourself maybe you should try that out.

It's also odd to me that the logo and the OMEGA text are painted on rather than applied. Almost every Omega I can think of has at least the logo applied. That's not a bad sign for sure and maybe that's how it's supposed to be, but it seems a bit suspicious.

not either anon, but I just did a bunch of research into this over the last couple weeks.

He's right, "Parnis" is a word that chink watch factories slap onto stuff they make in-house that they want to make a quick buck on. currently dominated by--but far from limited to--PAM/Marina Militare homages. however, some factories actually make acceptable-quality watches with SG or Miyota movements or good clone 6497 and 6498 movements. That the dial says "Parnis" tells you nothing. Watchuseek has a thread that identifies 5 online sellers that only deal in the quality Parnis manufacturers, including the two mentioned. just go to WUS and type "parnis" in the search, it says "read first."

Some sites have a standard upgrade charge for swanneck mvts (most folks say it's not worth it for these) or sapphire glass. There's usually a contact email for custom orders, too, which I think I'm going to look into that. I have a skellington wrist, so it's hard finding styling I want in a <44mm watch since larger is what's selling these days.

if you can find that magic combination of acceptable movement and the look/features you desire, then you can get an awesome deal--as low as $95 USD or like $130 with sapphire glass--but you sort thru a lot of rubbish.

if the first anon can pay $500, he can surely get a great watch, but as the other guy says, the popular homages are what sell, so that is a limiting factor.

just passing along what I learned.

I agree. Pateks are nice collection pieces but their movements are honestly fragile as fuck and can't take much more abuse than you'd encounter while working your cushy job as a corporate executive and maybe banging the occasional high-end prostitute.

There's plenty of nice watches that aren't fakes in every price range. But if there's a particular model you like a whole lot a lot and really want a replica of then there's lots of good replicas for most of the common watches if you're willing to spend a reasonable amount. Just don't get a $20 quartz Trolex from some dude on the street and don't try to show off with your fake watch because it's embarrassing.

I just received this Seiko 5 for repairing another watch that I plan on cleaning up.

I love the Roman numeral date.

Honestly, I can't tell if it's fake, really old, was put back together haphazardly (the "Japan Made" being obscured by the case) or some odd combination of the three but I think it has potential.

It's really weird, the inner dial has numbers from I to VII so I assume it correlates to the day of the week.

I'm currently shopping for baby's first watch. I like military style, smaller watches. Looking to spend as little as possible as I don't know if I'm gonna love wearing one every day. I've loved watches for a while now so basically what I'm saying is I want a starter watch to get me into collecting possibly.

Currently thinking of a seiko snk809, shits only like 60 bucks. I love the face a lot, but the case itsself is a little bland.

I really like leather goods so I want a nice strap to go with it. This worn and wound one looks really nice, but only fits 18mm while the seiko is 16.8. It's 60$ though so I'm thinking maybe I should invest in a watch that doesn't cost as much as a strap.

What is watch in pic related? Probably out of the range I want to spend, but anyone have suggestions on similar styles of watches, or similar straps that will fit the seiko?

This is the seiko I was thinking of getting. It apparantly retails for 185 and is on sale for 55 at jona shop. I know nothing of seiko 5s besides that there are a lot of them. Maybe this one has better mechanism due to its higher retail price?

Thinking of just getting it and tracking down a similar leather band that will fit it...

I wear pretty minimalist normal fits, raws and a t with leather shoes/boots so I'm guessing this kind of style will be alright. Probably pretty apparant I know nothing of watches besides that expensive ones are really pretty.

This is correct. Soap is not good for the seals on your watch. Divers can usually handle soap because the seals aren't exactly exposed anyways. Heat is also not good, but it's going to affect watches without screwdown crowns a lot worse than ones with them.
General rule is regardless of actual WR rating, you probably shouldn't take anything in the shower that doesn't have a screwdown crown.
Definitely not for swimming.

>> No.9613766

>>9613560
ETA will be easier to find cases for, but if you're talking about actual large-scale production, the miyota is a better choice. ETA is scaling down the amount of movements they sell to third parties and increasing the price for the few they do sell, so an ETA movement watch is not a sustainable choice for the future.

I can't speak for all makes, but my Weekender is rated 30m and it gets submerged frequently most days.

the kitchen I work in has no dish machine so I use the 3 sink method, the upshot is it gets dunked all day long. not for more than proly 30 secs at a time, though, and maybe a foot or two depth max. but frequently. absolutely no harm done.
