9497979 No.9497979 [Reply] [Original]

Is it ever possible to be ahead of the curve as a consumer? /fa/ continually pushes the notion that people are late on X trend or Y fad, that they've missed the boat, and they aren't up to date with the so-called current trends (which usually are never named).

I seriously doubt the current model of buying clothes and trying to mold into a pre-existing aesthetic, especially one that garners approval from other members of /fa/ which are all supposedly "behind" on whatever meaningful and exciting developments are happening in fashion and culture.

In my opinion, the only people who could be considered "fashion forward" are those like Huckleberry that do their own thing and create their own unique visions, and not visions directly stolen from the internet. It's fashion plagiarism and everyone is looking the same.

If you're going out tonight and planning on wearing a white tee, black bomber, black pants, and black raf velcros please just stay the fuck inside.

I agree, I was upset to find that most fits posted by anon are whatever the current approved fashion is (white CPs or other shoes, black everything else, bomber for good measure). I feel that /fa/ needs more unique fits

>> No.9498009

>>9497979
when i buy clothes i mostly get pieces that i think have a timeless design. not to say that a black bomber and black jeans are ever going 'out', but i don't want to redo my wardrobe just to hop on a trend. it can get kind of boring playing it safe all the time though

>> No.9498026

>>9497979
substitute huck for knoch or maybe dada and i'd agree

>> No.9498041

100% correct anon. Just dress in whatever you want; if you are smart enough to make this observation then you are clever enough to confidently carry yourself in whatever fits you like the most.

Fashion= Everyone's individual right to express themselves however they want through clothes, and Style= confidently carrying the fashions you wear to create Trends.

So much of /fa/ think they are ahead of the curve. I'm not going to judge; if you want to spend a grand on an Alex McQueen shirt because the design speaks something directly to you then go for it; your the man. I cant help but get a notion that a majority of /fa/ buy this sort of shit to try and make themselves feel more ahead of the curve than others though when the reality is the industry thrives off shallow people like them to make a majority of their dollars.

>> No.9498072

i think having an autistic fit is probably better than being accepted by /fa/

at least there is room for development, if people like your fit on here its usually because it already fits the mold, but there's never any surprise or innovation because experimentation is seriously discouraged.

>> No.9498171

Disregard anyone talking about trends. It's embarrassing and pathetic. Each person needs to determine what they themselves like, not what they can wear that other people will like.

Don't just keep refreshing /fa/ or you'll likely be sucked into the hivemind whether you like it or not. Seek out inspiration everywhere

>> No.9498185

I believe fashion is a reflection of the culture, and at this point the stoic aspect of the post-culture civilization phase narrows the acceptable range of what can be worn or not, thus fulfilling Andy Warhol's prophecies of a socialist state where everyone eventually thinks the same and looks the same. The way we consume fashion is never to become something, its to fit in to the army and tribes. The fashion moment occurs when the opposite happens and is able to brand itself as the new tribe to be followed.

>> No.9498230

I've never seen anyone wearing Rick sneakers irl instead of me OP, dont know what you're talking about.

>> No.9498276

Everything said here should be taken with a grain of salt. Its up to you whether you take what everyone says here to heart. However. If you plan on developing your own style you're gonna make mistakes and more than likely people here are going to rip you for it, fair enough, this is 4chan you come here for the brutality honest opinions rather than for rep. I'd say that if you're looking to look more presentable and maybe just a bit more fashion forward than the normal person, hiveminding here isn't that bad of thing. If you really want to make fashion more than just casual you're going to have to apply yourself and draw inspiration yourself. /fa/ will not do this for you, and if you want to be something more its not advised to only lurk here and nowhere else. Go to a runway show if you have connections, subscribe to a fashion magazine, go to interesting stores in your area, browse through other forums and lastly and most importantly get a career/job that you enjoy doing because let's face it, being fashionable is expensive as fuck.

We can continue with the actual discussion tho
I can get behind OPs point on how doing your own thing is cool but it's not necessary 'fashion forward', but really being fashion forward is not necessarily even a point one wants to achieve. At least if it means becoming trendhopper because it's going to be big. I think the 'end point' of fashion would be having your own style while still keeping it contemporary, like incorporating bigger trends and looks to your style in a way that you still keep it real to yourself.
But then even being modern and contemporary might not be what some styles want to achieve.

>> No.9498770

>>9498738
why doesnt that constitute style? do you think they pick their clothes at random without any consideration to what theyre wearing? if so youd be completely mistaken because neckbeards are some of the most opinionated people when it comes to clothing (skinny jeans are fucking gay, that guy dresses like a fucking faggot, etc) and they most certainly have internalized a look they aim for every time they put on clothing

Well what really is the definition of style? I guess what I meant was a consistent style that is clearly distinct. Like if knoch, dada and huck all would drop trips and get new cameras and start posting their fit pics here, so that you wouldn't be able to tell it's them from the pics straight away, I would immediately think them still or go "Well this reminds me of knoch/dada/hucks fits", that's more than I can say about myself (I don't actually post fits tho) at least and to me that shows they all clearly have done something right.
The example about cargoweargin neckbeard is kinda dumb to use here cause we haven't established anything about the said example other than neckbeard and the cargos and just that alone isn't a "style" in my opinion.

That a concept is trending in any context, can be defined simply as "what is currently popular within a certain group of people".

That a concept is "popular" indicates that a larger than normal part of the group favors a certain fashion concept.

Regardless of what the general consensus of a certain group is, I tend to not let their collective decision influence me. It is often just interesting to note what people in general seem to like at this current time, but not much more beyond that.

I value individual decisions based on what you prefer and what works well with your looks, rather than trying to apply something that has been decided upon by average persons with average persons in mind.

If you want conformity, then go right ahead and follow trends and obey the hive mind of a certain group. If you feel like expressing a belonging to a certain social group, then you are of course free to do so.

I'm generally very picky about whose opinions I care about, and I would never care for the opinions of someone who cares about trends - because I consider them to be completely irrelevant for my personal style. Opinion discarded - as simple as that.

If you are a person who applies critical thinking to fashion and style, who makes your own clothes, picks out new outfit combinations, and is the avant-garde - even though the rest of the troop is not quite following - then you'll get so much more respect from me than if you would simply allow others to make your stylistic choices for you.

In short: individuality, critical though, and experimentation > conformity, and adhering to the status quo.

This may be corny, but on one episode of Queer Eye one of the gays was like "Don't try and be fashionable, be stylish."

I don't see how any of these are objectively better than each other, apart (possibly) from knoch's better use of silhouette.

I don't think you understand my comment, from a subjective viewpoint I agree huck looks like dogshit erryday and knoch has some sort of fit-magic up his surplus sleeves, but from an entirely objective viewpoint they are all three decent casual looks.
