a lot of the american crew products are pretty good. I like forming cream the best probably. then fiber for matte finish, and grooming cream for some shine (but still slightly less than pomade, I don't like the greasy slick look).

Bedhead for men "matte separation" is fucking awesome for a matte finish, high hold wax. & a very small amount of it goes a long way.

American Crew Fiber if it's short. Gatsby Purple Wax if it's longer. I never style my hair anymore though. Too much of a hassle because it leaves residue in your hair. Natty life.

If I want a suave/classic/formal look I use Suavecito pomade and comb my hair into a side-parted pompadour kind of thing.
Classic pomades provides both excellent shine and hold. If I want even more hold and shine, I use Murray's petroleum-based pomade.

If casual, I use Star Wax Toffee (advertised as pomade but its texture is more like wax/putty) for the much lighter hold and flexibility it offers. I usually just slick my hair back casually.
Having it water-based is also a huge plus so that I can easily wash it out.

If I really don't give a fuck that day, I just don't put anything in my hair.
