Get on that Loomis. Get to grips with the basics, perhaps take a few figure drawing classes. Especially the latter is great fun.

I myself like using charcoal and working in reverse. Start out with a big smudge with a few lines to guide you and sculpt away with a kneaded eraser. Good control on the mids, remove the highlights, accentuate the darks. You can gradually render in more defintion and it's a solid lesson in how to do volume and volumetrics.
