I want to purchase a new watch, but from what I've noticed from the watch threads is people seem to dislike quartz, and they seem to prefer mechanical. My problems lays with the fact that i dislike the bulkiness of mechanical watches.

What are the pros and cons of quartz watches? Why do some people dislike them?

Quartz is more reliable, much more accurate, and will be much less maintenance in the long run.

People who are really into watches might not be as impressed with a quartz watch because mechanical watches usually have an element of artistry with their movements, and involve displays of technical skill on the part of the horologists who made the watch. The movements are more complicated, and the actual mechanics of the watch are more elaborate, which kind of makes the watch a bit more "special".

If you're going to buy a watch to keep time and accentuate your look, buy a quartz watch.

If you're going to sink some serious money into buying a watch for the purpose of appreciating it as a piece of horology, go mechanical.

The only exception to this are cheap mechanicals. Mechanicals aren't inherently more bulky; they come in many styles and sizes. I'm wearing a slim Sinn 556 now, but I also have a bulky Seiko skx. You don't have to spend a lot of money either, half the watch forums online jizz over the seiko 5 which is under $100

Throw some more mechanical watch names at me that are not bulky and have a small case diameter. I'm on the look out for a new watch.

What are some good durable watches that you can get for around 40 dollars at Walmart?
