None of this sizing advice is reliable. It's all over the place. People telling you to go down a full size then the next tells you to go up. The only real way is trying them on. But this isn't possible most times. Sometimes when there's free shipping/returns I order 2 or 3 different sizes and then keep the best one. This isn't ideal though because you have to shell out 3 times as much money and then wait for the refund.

Tried on these Red Wings at Nordstroms Rack that were only $184. Sized down a full size and these shoes fit snuggly as I walked in them for a bit.

However, after I took them off it seems like they were a bit tight on my toes. Should I push for a half size up or does the shoe loosen a bit when breaking it in?

the creases come from stress on the leather. Them being too big can add to the stress, but those things form anyway (you can use a shoetree)
put your thumb from your largest toe to the tip of the shoe, if you have a bit of space then get the small size, because most decent leathers will break in and give generously.
