Danke. I've got a few zulus to go with it. It looks great on a bright orange PVD hardware zulu. Yeah it's from cheapestnatostraps. I've made at least a dozen orders from there, the quality is great for the price.

I haven't. Tracking hasn't shown anything since it left Nippon on the 19th. Somewhat of a bummer, I was looking forward to getting them around the same time. Hopefully it'll be here by the end of the week.

Dig it. I really want a Racetimer Black, but don't have a spare thousand bucks kicking around, and if I did I'd probably get a Sinn 556i.

/fa/: where every watch needs to be as minimalist as possible. Anything out of the ordinary is to be deemed hideous.

>>9128945

That gives me confidence because my order should be here soon. It's been two weeks and today is the 10th business day since shipping.

Do you think there's any novelty with the Pradata, and do you think it will wear off? Like you said you can flip it within a week, but it does look good and would put most of your zulus to good use.

I like the Racetimers but I think they're too thick for having a flat case... I dunno, the Le Mans does look tall, but it's got a really interesting case which kind of makes it worth it. That and the Racetimers are fairly close to Tudor's designs. Plus, I picked mine up for $880 shipped, which is about $750USD I think.

I do really like the 556i, but at 38.5mm it's a touch too small for me. I imagine it would be even smaller for you. Are you about 8"?

Heh.

Aye, like I said, fantastic quality for the price. More than worth the wait all facts considering. Although it is odd that it's taking so long, I got mine in about a week. Ordered it after the SARB and Pradata were sent out and received them before either watch arrived. Pretty neat.

There's novelty with the Pradata in that it's a brilliantly priced, fricker styled dive watch. I like it a lot more than I thought I would, and will probably continue to like it. I doubt I'll get rid of it any time soon though. Strap usage isn't a concern there, I've only a handful of 22mm straps, most of my straps are 20mm.

They do look pretty big, but they're certainly nice and I'm sure I could wear it if I make a Pradata look like a mid-sized watch.

Likewise, I'd have no problem wearing a 556 or 656. 38mm is probably the smallest I could wear, sure, but it'd be a nice covert wear that wouldn't get in the way when working, and it could make good use of my ever expanding collection of nato straps. Pic related, ~42mm, 38mm, 36mm.

How do you feel about your Pradata? I know you've got the brushed version.

I've got the blasted version. I asked OM to ship it with the olive zulu instead of the blue. I think it looks much nicer. It's on the bracelet now as my OVM is using the zulu. I think the blasted finish makes it more tooly, which is what I was after at the time of purchase.

I like it. I was thinking of selling but I don't think I will now. I know I could recoup most of my money but I doubt I'll find something else of such a high quality for the money. So that leaves the Armida and maybe my Glycine that I could potentially sell.

38mm is my limit too, but I'd prefer it to be 40mm. I used to hate Sinn's logo because I thought it was too plain, but it fits their design philosophy. I've got a thing for German companies it seems. My grail of the month is the Muhle Glashutte Seebataillon GMT. Simple, effective, tooly execution of a GMT.

Ah. I thought it was the brushed version for some reason. Oh well.

Yeah, it's nice. If I had gotten into WISdom earlier and purchased one, I still don't know if I would have chosen the PVD version or the brushed. The PVD finish on it looks divine but the coating on the bracelet is second rate and seems to scratch easily, meaning I probably won't wear it very often with the bracelet. I wouldn't have gone blasted as if the case were to get scratched I feel it'd probably be harder to hide it after the fact.

>My grail of the month is the Muhle Glashutte Seebataillon GMT. Simple, effective, tooly execution of a GMT.

Mmm. Looks great. I've got a handful of grails myself that will probably remain as such for a while. A Speedmaster 3570.50 which is THE moon watch, and a Sinn U1 SDR, both of which are in the obtainable-with-lots-of-saving tier. A few others there, but those two are certainly the ones off the top of my head.

Then there's the never-gonna-ever-own tier IWC Big Pilot's Perpetual Calendar Top Gun. It's beautiful.

To quench my interest in a U1, I'm waiting to pick up a Hexa K500 off of f29, but plenty of people are obviously enjoying them as they aren't going up too often. If anything I can buy the version I want straight from Hexa, I'll just pay a couple hundred more than I would for one used.

It's the Gunmetal version, which are currently sold out on the Instrmnt site. Damn near next best thing to brand new, wore it for all of 40 minutes and it's been in my watch box since.

Also, I had a MVMT Black/Black as well. Gave it to my brother as a gift and he digs it.

Love that IWC but I can't seem to get past the fact that a pilot wouldn't need so many complications. Chronograph and maybe date would be the only complications IMO. Still, it's a real beauty.

Yeah it seems a lot of people were a bit unhappy with the way they coated the bracelet. It's understandable though, imagine the extra time and cost involved of coating each individual link.

Everyone needs a Speedy at least once in their WIS lives. Love that Sinn, one of my favourites. Have you seen their oil filled quartz diver? It's pretty crazy. It's used so there's little to no reflection while underwater. There are a few other manufacturers who do/did this.

I've always liked the crown location on the Hexa lineup. I can see how it would scratch your U1 itch.

Yeah. Probably not needed, but then again, what else really IS needed apart from three hands to tell time and maybe the date? It's just an engineering marvel. Not the most advanced of course, but still quite impressive.

I've read into it. The Sinn UX. Looks almost exactly like the U1. If I needed a watch that was absolutely bomb proof and could deal with the tick of a quartz watch, it'd be the one I'd go for. On a related note, instead of getting a 556i I might spring for a used non-UTC 856. Sure it doesn't have the clean look that a non-numeral dial would, but it's a little larger at 40mm, still has 20mm lugs, has a matte dial vs the 556's glossy one, and is offered tegmented. It's the best of both worlds.

Also, another somewhat attainable grail for me would be the Longines Legend Diver. That super compressor case and everything else about it is superb.

Miyota 9015 and IIRC it'll be around $450.

I really like both colour combos, but because I just got the OVM, I think I'm leaning towards the silver/blue. I need a lighter dial in my box.

Yup. Came across that thread a couple months ago I believe, been keeping track of it. Great to see it's starting to take shape. The silver/blue version isn't exactly what I was hoping it'd be, it feels like something's missing. But the other one with the yellowish markers and black sunburst dial look just fantastic.

Another random question, have you heard of the Suri Mito? A rather toned down watch with a pretty simple design, but I really like the overall feel of it. That sandwich dial looks delicious.

Also, have you been keeping an eye on Nadim's next Helgray watch thread? Those chronos are gonna be great to have in hand.

That's for the future. He's got a mecaquartz chronograph that's been in the works for a bit of time now. I believe I mentioned something about it a month or two ago. The Kickstarter is launching some time next week. By golly, I noticed it immediately and wanted to kick myself for it. It'll buff out when I get the appropriate cloth and compound to do so.

Believe it or not Omega considers this his deluxe Speedmaster movement-wise and puts an extra effort in finishing quality. That's why the rest of the line has a metal caseback while mine has a see-through crystal. That's the same reason when I bought it was about 2 grand more expensive, although today the price gap has become smaller. The date and moonphase are pluses that I enjoy. :-)

The right one is probably a fake, or the movement was swapt aftermarket in order to create two "franken" to prey on unwise collectors (one fake case with fake dial but original movement in a see-through caseback and one original case and dial in a solid metal caseback with a cheap fake caliber.

it's the same movement one is just unfinished and unmodified (panerai uses the eta 6497 UNITAS movt and pretties her up) the only thing is the 6497 is not COSC certified which they lied about, then the perialage and the geneva stripes w/ anodized screws are just a brand wide thing they left out

no big deal

fake panerais are actually half decent, like most fake panerais utilizing the 2824 movt, i bet i could pass off as real even in person to most people who post in this threads as long as it's peralized/striped with an exhibition caseback

since they'll feel heavier/nicer than the average tissot the average fuccboi gets for graduating community college

I know is the same movement. The discussion here is about the lack of finishing (if it can even be called that) as I don't believe Panerai made this to fit a special edition of only 150 pieces gaining such a shitty profit (30,000 usd) if we consider that, inside the manufacture, a decoration like the left one can be obtainable for about 200 dollars.

Miyota makes really good movements, but you just need to price your watch accordingly.

The 9015 is excellent and can be had for around $300-600. Higher than that and you'll probably want an ETA, unless there's a shitload of manufacturing that goes into the case, dial, etc.

The 8215 however, should never be priced more than about $350 I reckon. It's pedestrian as fuck.

Thanks anon. I've got the supplied rubber strap I'm going to put on. It's a PITA though and I'm a bit lazy so I'll keep it on the leather for a little while longer.

It's a rally inspired strap, so it fits the automotive theme of the watch.

in terms of quality, what is it about truly good watches that makes them so good? I mean, at $300 and beyond.

No. there are great quartz watches out there. It's just that the majority of quartz watches use a $5 miyota movement and are being sold at a ridiculous markup.
>why are they as bad as they are?
Terrible cheap materials, ridiculous oversized cases, etc.
>what do you look for when you handle a watch?
Assuming you're talking about antique stores and the like, the first overall thing you should look at is the brand. The brand actually tells you the most about the quality of the watch. Obviously you should check that the movement is in good working order.
Beyond that, you want to make sure the dial is original and not refinished, make sure the crown is the signed original, and that the caseback is original.

anyone can you just use your money elsewhere

you'd be suprised at how far your money goes if you :

1: stop buying the latest and greatest phone @ 0% down+ 2 year sprint contract +$3000/year

2: stop buying a macbook pro every year +$1500/year

3: not buy that PS4 you don't even have time to play +$500 after tax

4: not build a gaming pc every year and only upgrade it when it absolutely needs it, sure you don't have the latest and greatest i7 to timestamp in /g/ but who cares +$3500

stop drinking/getting hammered at clubs +$2500

stop wearing rick leathers +$2500+tax

now you can afford luxury purchases rather than next year's e-waste

that california forces you to pay to get rid of

hey guys
i'm the retard with the bagelsport
the second hand keeps getting stuck on the minute hand because they aren't straight, so I have to shake the watch a little bit to make it keep moving.
I sent a request to the eBay seller to send me a working watch so I'll see how it goes and keep you guys updated.

Not the anon you're replying to, but what's the diameter in mm?

Automatic? I've got pic related. It's my only 'flieger', even though it's not a proper genuine remake of the Luftwaffe watches because of the sub seconds at 9 o'clock.

Type B dial is easily my favourite these days.

It was my first mechanical watch. I got it about 3 years ago now. Since then I've become more interested in affordable watches. Pic related

The Invicta has definitely served me well but I don't wear it too often as the service department of some bullshit mall 'watch repair' fucked the movement.

This is my collection >>9130049

Pic related is my collection in about June.

What did they do?

>> No.9144265

>>9144221

Invicta was my first mech watch. I wanted to get a nato for it, but I couldn't remove one of the spring bars.

It was rusted in. So SHE (no experience at all) brought out pic related.

Hammered away, got the spring bar free, but in the process dislodged the 11 hour marker. It was just fanging about in the dial.

I went back, asked her to fix it, she said come back in 10 minutes. I came back in 10 minutes and she's got my movement out of the watch and she can't figure out how to get it back in. In the process of her getting the movement out she fucked up one of the 'winding gears' (can't think of the legit name).

It went in for a service 'free of charge' (thanks, cunts) and I got it back 6 weeks later.

Problems:
> smudges UNDER the crystal
> hour hand on an upward angle
> minute hand on a downard angle, extremely close to hitting the markers
> movement doesn't hand-wind like it should (gritty as fuck, PR is about 24hr instead of 40)
> rotor itself is wobbly

>>9144265
What a fucking nightmare. This is why I started learning watch repair on my own and why, though I've learned a lot through self-study, I'm still somewhat reluctant to take on any work from friends or forum members.

>> No.9144298

>>9144265
smudges on the crystal and mal aligned indicators with gritty counterweights are how some/most invictas come out of box though...most people report indicies coming off the face of them too

also

>rusted spring bar

this is not normal for watches
i have had vintage hamiltons and vintage cartier watches older than i am and have not had any rust on them whatsoever

You on WUS?

I'm thinking of doing a timezone course over summer (ausfag). I'm doing 3 subs at uni so it might be a bit hectic, but I think I can manage considering the duration is up to the student . The SW200 is identical to the ETA 2824-2. I want to get my Invicta working properly.

>>9144298

Wasn't vintage. It was a 2.5yo watch at the time. There shouldn't be any rust considering it's supposed to be SS throughout.

>> No.9144456

>>9144348
Yeah, I'm on WUS but I'm not too keen on connecting my chan identity with my WUS identity.

I hear you on the whole schooling thing: I've got no time for watch repair or any other hobbies, for that matter, since starting school again.

The TimeZone course should be good; most of what I've learned I acquired by spending hours pouring over old forum posts and obscure blogs, seldom with enough pictures or explanations, so a dedicated course is probably a better way to go.
