that's more subtle but there's still that little echo of the "frY" in there to me.

other danish people say it quite strongly as fry-ya so i'm guessing at some point she just decided everybody is going to say frey-ya anyway and went with it. doesn't seem like she gives a fuck from the interview.

looking back at these things makes me realise how much her accent has changed since she started out. she sounds almost english to me now.

I wouldn't call it ubiquitous, but it's far less novel than it was back in 2008, when she first rocked it. I don't think Freja introduced the look so much as just being ahead of the curve on it. Dykes have been rocking androgyny for decades, she just arguably introduced it to high fashion.

I wonder if she sort-of opened the door for this recent wave gender-bending models we've been seeing. Would people like Erika Linder have a career without Freja?

Can't you read, anon? "This too shall pass."

There's a moment in your twenties where you start, for the firstime, wishing you were younger, that there weren't so many kids behind you, that you had done x and y by when people might still freight your age with a word like "nubile," or that worst slur, "innocent." Even though at this point in your twenties and well past it people will call you "still a baby" and not without reason.

Yes, well past it. You get past it when you realize that what you were wisting for is an illusion, that childhood and adolescence are constituted of twinned lies: that they are fun and light and not serious, and that nothing in them is permanent.

That realization is true memory coming back in, the opposite of nostalgia and fantasy. You remember that you knew better all along, that all you wanted as a kid was for your life to matter, that all your makebelieves then were of your life mattering.

>> No.8970074

>>8970070
And you realize, in that rubber-band memory movement, that everything that actually happened, and/or didn't, was you earning the knowledge that makes mattering possible: that everything that happens in time is permanent, because it immediately, necessarily recedes from your ability to alter it, and keeps going as it was/is. To pass is to become permanent. Because time. Just like a tattoo on a model in the last throes of kid-dom, as she stares into a camera willing everything that is to come on, down to a fuccboi griping on her aging on 4chan and another fuccboi having an explosion of feels about aging, because that's what happens when you're famous.

That willingness, to live into time, and so to permit consequence to accrue as it passes, is not automatic with the knowledge. To know the score is first, but to play it is a choice. To choose to stare timelessly back at youth, to choose impotence, smallness, silence is a choice too many make. Unwilling to own themselves as they happened, to feel the weight of a life, they stay like that kid, wishing it all mattered, except now no longer on the way to anything but a corpse they hate peremptorily. What should be their flourishing instead turns into a performance of the lies of childhood: recreational (not fun), light, not serious, as impermanent and unmattering as a human life can be.

>> No.8970078

>>8970074
Don't be like that; let Freja and yourself get old.

What all this also amounts to is a growing into yourself. Like the discussion ITT on Freja's partners. Like one anon said, I've heard “she was screwing models left and right when she started,” but yeah, who else would she be screwing? Plucked out of Denmark into the shrunken dollhouse world of fashion, who else was she around to fuck? Skeevy olds? Of course the people she went with in that tiny room were other hot kids.

She didn't stay there. By twenty-seven, she's found a broader world, other satisfactions, romantic-sexual and, I'm sure, otherwise.

(Also, by all means, admire someone who's a model for their public career, but we really shouldn't/don't need to try to dissect pap shots.)

I don't mean to imply that she's less valuable because of her age, it's just that the experience gained through aging is diametrically opposed to the aesthetic beauty that's modeling's raison d'être.

One can lament the slow decline of physical beauty, especially with one of the most attractive people in the world, without also wishing that things stayed the same. It's like watching a band that's a decade past their prime. They might still be good, but can't compete with their contemporaries the same way they were once able to. The nostalgia of once seeing them at their best combined with seeing them still chug along mediocrely is a sad reminder of your own decline and mortality.

sad but true. life gets scary as you get closer to 30. I think she's going to age gracefully though because she understands the realities of the industry as well as anyone. like that video of comforting abbey lee... "it's not about you, it's about the shoes". I wonder if she'll keep moving more towards design the way a lot musicians become producers. I'd love too see where that goes.

>The nostalgia of once seeing them at their best combined with seeing them still chug along mediocrely is a sad reminder of your own decline and mortality.

This is exactly what I was speaking against.

Nostalgia.
The idea that Freja was at her best at 22, or whenever.
That she is mediocre now because her face is less babyish.
That to talk about time is necessarily to talk about decline.

>diametrically opposed to the aesthetic beauty that's modeling's raison d'être.

Diametrically opposed to the selling of youth that's a key mode for fashion marketing, sure. It works by conflating youth and beauty, but it isn't inherent to anything but the contemporary market.

>mortality

Overhyped and overthought, tbh.

The average bro on the street maybe, but not rich fucks. Top dolla prostitution rings run side by side with fashion shows.

>And i wouldn't use a term as simister as 'exploitation' to describe being paid thousands to simply look good
Freja and a few buch of others are considered top and are paid top. The others are paid meh or next to nothing, and we could start talking about exploitation. Anyway I might agree with you on that but I was referring to things like being enslaved by a gang of slavs and forced to prostitute on european streets, or being raped by an uncle in early age etc.
If you are a pool little sexy girl, the first thing the world will try to make to you is rape.
Take a redpill once a while goddamnit.

>It works by conflating youth and beauty
It's not just a marketing gimmick. There's evidence to suggest that youth is inherently attractive due to the fact its the biologically prime moment to procreate. The longer our primordial ancestors waited to procreate, the more likely it was that they'd either die before they got the chance, or get a disease that negatively affected their offspring. Freja might be a much more interesting, well-rounded, and valuable person now than she was in her late teens, but you can't honestly suggest that she's as physically appealing.

>That to talk about time is necessarily to talk about decline.
At a certain point, it is. Entropy always takes over. Even great artists lose their ability over time.

>> No.8972224

>>8971833
You're right, my view was first world centric. But the one advantage of being beautiful in the third world is that you're less likely to end up being poor. The wealthy and powerful guys over there tend to care more about physical beauty than our rich and powerful guys do. You'll still end up having advantages of opertunity that normal looking people don't.

not the person you were responding to, but is this based just on shots of her walking out of one vuitton show in minimal makeup and an unflattering outfit? she still looks stunning to me. i do think there's a point where the things you're saying have some validity, but freja is far from reaching it.

>> No.8972336

>>8972226
I'm exaggerating a bit. If you look at her recent stuff like this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRk6jw6-B88
she's still far more striking and interesting than most models out there, but i'm also beginning to see the first signs of her aging decline, and that's sort of depressing.

Compare that video to this one
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQSiJ8oWLFg
and you'll see what I mean. One is a video of a person at the absolute peak of modern aesthetic coolness, while the other is just a very good model doing okay work. She just isn't as relevant as she once was.

That being said, I really hope she has a long career. Even at her nadir her face is more captivating than most 18 year old models.

women having the opportunity to sell themselves isn't oppression, it's a fucking privilege. they're not forced into it, it's just another option available to them that isn't available to average-looking people. they can just ignore that path and actually work for a living like the rest of us do. unless they're literally taken hostage, it's self-inflicted exploitation.

That shit sounds nice, but it's only accomplishable by a privileged few. Someone with a family to feed is entirely dependent on others, and someone who's reliant on employer discretion can't live a totally free existence where they can completely disregard how others perceive them.

Freja's choices seem to have been started as a teenager before she had this solid career in place. I see it as more of a difference in attitude that makes some people settle for becoming dependent. Having the confidence to follow your own path and grab opportunities when you see them. I know less well off people who live like this too, they just accept taking a bit more hassle for it than a model would and maybe aren't wearing Balmain.

The world is essentially an unequal, unfair place and it doesn't really benefit anybody else for her not to have nice things because fundamental differences will always reassert themselves. IMO the best you can do is something like her involvement with Operation Surfinbird where you have a lot of people with no food and you can very practically give them some.

Does she listen to metal too? I'd love to know which bands. FWIW I think she's quit smoking now.

I agree. She is privileged, and she's working within a system that doesn't actively discourage her pseudo-rebellion (in fact, it's probably the source of her appeal), but her choices are still unorthodox and interesting in a high fashion context. She cut her hair at the hight of her career despite promising her agent that she wouldn't, she got 16 tattoos and a nipple piercing years before that was acceptable, she's openly gay and androgynous, she's completely absent from social media, and apparently gives photographers who want to control her a hard time. She might not be out there fighting the system, but her micro rebellions are genuinely pretty punk.

Being born attractive enough to make money off of it might not be 'cool', but taking advantage of that genetic luck and refusing to let your bosses dictate the trajectory of your career is still badass.

I think she would always have become something interesting even without modelling. She could have been a singer, an actress, an activist like her aunt.. whatever she wanted. Part of what makes her cool is there's no desperation. She doesn't need the job and can happily leave it for a year to chill with her family.

'Authentic' punk often becomes another kind of restriction; the rejection of luxury creates a new taboo. Freja seems free beyond all that. A reminder that you can do whatever you want whether that's getting a neck tattoo or wearing Chanel or feeding the homeless because it's all outweighed by the focus you bring to those few moments of creative work where you have to be bulletproof.

Once you look at the ideological underpinnings as to why punks turn luxury into a taboo, you realize that it's probably merited. And that selling your body to perpetuate those class distinctions is antithetical to that rebellious ethos.

It all comes down to whether or not you think modeling is a proper artistic avenue, or whether they're just glorified clothes hangers used to sell stuff that's too expensive for 98% of the population.
If it's the former, then there's something depressing about how much of the struggle inherent to any endeavor (artistic or not) can be worked around without any conscious effort just by being born with certain genes. That someone can contribute something as worthwhile as something I spend months on while expending comparatively nearly no effort.
Maybe that's just crass jealousy?

>I think she would always have become something interesting even without modelling.
Probably, but she wouldn't be rich or famous. Her continued success is the result of some talent, but the impetus for her hiring was her body, not her effort.

Didn't she joke that she would have been a construction worker weren't it for modeling in some interview?

As society moves away from the aristocratic model and become more equal I think there's an anger that there are still things we can't have. Sometimes a legitimate anger considering the wages a lot people are being paid at the moment. But take the car she's standing next to in the Vuitton ads. I'll never own it but I enjoy that it exists and I doubt that would happen without market forces being what they are. I'll never be as attractive as Freja, but I'm glad she's there to admire. The problem is the need to grasp everything for oneself, not taking pleasure in nice things.

Like you say, it comes down to whether you see the model as a passive clothes hanger. My honest feeling about that is that it varies with the show. I hear Freja has her own understanding of lighting and shooting and plenty to bring to that, and I see a real intensity in some of her backstage videos. But there are also going to be shows which are very stuctured by what designers want and ultimately it's their call. But I do think that to succeed at a high level beauty is only the basis that the rest of the work builds on. Models remind me of atheletes in that way. In the modern world you need certain genetic attributes to have a hope of competing but if you don't put the work in you're still going to fail.

>>8993862
I've heard in the region of ten to twnety thousand for a runway show, more for shooting ad campains.. up to the hundreds of thousands if they're big enough. On the other hand people like Vogue barely pay anything because it's about the prestige of being in the magazine.

Appearance is a requirement but it doesn't preclude the potential for other abilities to be there, and that's what separates great models from okay ones. Even as a vessel you can channel somebody's vision more or less effectively.

But I also remember an interview where she says "it's easy, you just walk" so maybe I just want to see too much in it because I'm smitten with her personality... I cant say I look at models as a group and feel overwhelmed by their creative talent. I hope she'll keep moving into fields like design where that's more overt.

>> No.8994688

She's done campaigns for Louise Vutton, Maybeline, and Chanel. She probably has at least a couple million in the bank. Most models don't make much more than $100,000 a year though, and are usually dropped after a few seasons at most. So models like Freja's are the exception.

I really think that's it. I wouldn't even say it's necessarily her personality; we ascribe so much to her simply because of how she looks. An average-looking person who behaved like Freja wouldn't get a modicum of the attention she's gotten. While someone who looked identical to Freja, but with a more common personality, would probably still be a model.
I get the impression that the fascination people have with models is entirely superficial, and that we try to justify it by claiming that talent is somehow involved.

Freja is cool because she looks and acts androgynous. And unless that's entirely an affectation meant to cultivate an image, I wouldn't call it talent. Being yourself doesn't take conscious effort.

But it's pronounced that way in a bunch of other languages, including original Old Norse.

It can't really be compared to calling a Miguel "Michael" or something – a situation where both names might have stemmed from the same origin, but then slowly diverged over time. At that point it's no longer just a different pronunciation, but a different name entirely.

I personally have a biblical name that's spelled identically in various languages, but it doesn't make any sense to use the English pronunciation while speaking French or Spanish just because I happen to have been born in the US.

Fuck off you pretentious, irrationally anti-American cliché. If a name is region or language specific like Jean, or Miguel, or George, then that makes complete sense, but the rules are looser for names with multiple accepted pronunciations. Generally the polite thing to do is to use the pronunciation that the person you're referring to actually uses, which in this case is Frey-yah.

I'm Hispanic and I lived in Quebec for a bit. Being an American doesn't prevent me from understanding the concept of multi-lingualism.

I found the Marxist.
Land cultivation is itself ability. And the heritability of traits is taken pretty seriously outside of your shitty sociology classes.

She went crazy, had a kid, and got addicted to prescription drugs. Don't know if her downward spiral was what caused the breakup, or was a reaction to it.

It's a combination of both privilege and natual talent. Wealth distribution is initially random, but the upper class married the talented and powerful, which then made those qualities more prevalent among their peers.

Does Arizona still even model anymore? I haven't seen her in anything for at least a year.

It seems like Freja pretty much outlasted every single one of her peers. Been going strong for nearly a decade, while Kershaw, Arizona, and Irina seem competitively absent.

We should just turn into thefashionspot and have a constant Freja thread up at all times. They've had threads dedicated to her up every day since like 2005.

>> No.9023359

Freja threads remind me of fa in its heyday. We should have them more often.
