as an engineer, this is true. anything like Pro E or a C complier or any heavier stuff like that may only be available on a Uni PC anyway. The extra mobility is worth it over the pro.

but...

WAIT WAIT WAIT

There's probably going to be a new Macbook Air announced this month, it will be for sale around the new year. I have been waiting 1.5 years for this. They have never redone the Air, this should be epic. It probably will come in space grey, silver and gold as well.

I study physics and I have a 13" (retina) MacBook Pro, which is about perfect for what I do. It handles moderate data crunching/modelling/compliling very well, and the screen is fucking dope. Also, build quality. Feels solid, is pretty light, silent and beautiful.

Maybe wait for the new airs that should get announced in a week, if they have retina screens as well, consider copping that instead.

as a guy with a chromebook I can say they are pretty meh. You HAVE to be connected to the internet if you are trying to do anything useful other than read pdfs or someshit

I mainly use it as a means of reading schoolbooks so I don't need to carry around a bunch of books like some sort of pencilpusher

I am probably going to get a thinkpad because I want something I can code, draw circuit sims and use something like matlab

>> No.8921963

i have a thinkpad t440. very light, good components, good battery life, and very minimal design. i've gotten compliments on it from housemates and other friends.

Ultrabooks are fuckin' shite in terms of performance. They have pussy-tier, low-power processors that carry i5/i7 tag but they're only in name and not performance.

>> No.8922135

>>8920493
The new revision is supposed to bring a new chip (better battery/performance), maybe a new design and a retina screen (the only think that made me go with an rMBP over a MBA). If that's worth it to you, might as well wait. The event is on the 16th or 20th or something, so it's pretty close.

The only issue I could think of with going to a retina display, is that there could be performance issues in the first generation like there was with the first 13 inch rMBP.

So you have to decide for yourself wether you want to take notes faster or take notes and learn at the same time.

Mathematica, MATLAB, and Unix/Linux is available for Mac or Windows. I doubt you'll be using much of anything else at school.

What phone are you using? If it's an iPhone, buy a Mac. Otherwise, buy a PC.

1080p IPS ~14" display, SSD, and a decent dual or quad core processor are the main things you should be worried about.
