For me one of the important things is keeping the thickness on top under control, like in this picture the guy's hair makes his head look weird and massive.
Couple that with an already big forehead and you got a problem.

I have my stylist take a pair of thinning scissors on the very top. My hair grows fast and thick, so I have to do it pretty often to maintain the cut's shape. You are right, the longer I dont do it the bigger the top bulges out. Looks awful.
