I was thinking a thing last night...

right..

vintage preppy.

The whole point of the modern 'preppy' style is that it's distinctively not cosplay-esque - that is, that it's interesting sartorially whilst being socially acceptable (unlike the dandies in #menswear or the avant-garde runway styles)

Take cues or elements (those jumpers/cardigans are nice) but don't go too far with the vintage elements. Disregard everything those models are doing below the waist

>whilst being socially acceptable (unlike the dandies in #menswear or the avant-garde runway styles)

Where do you live that #menswear isn't socially acceptable?

And there's certainly places where avant-garde clothing will get raised eyebrows and stares, though few it wouldn't just get written off as an eccentricity. Likewise, there's places - or, contexts, milieus - where anything but avant-garde isn't acceptable.

Why does /fa/ try to turn everything into such a monolith?

>> No.8829795

Let's face it, if you had to choose to have coffee with either a guy in a blue oxford, navy cable and washed jeans, or the guy with the slicked back hair, circle glasses, precision tailored suit, carefully double-knotted cravat and velvet slippers without socks sporting carefully trimmed-so-it-looks-not-trimmed stubble, who would you choose?

Not trying to make monolithic statements, but trying too hard in any direction is a mistake

I mean, just going off that? The latter. No question. I like people who put thought into things. The former guy sounds like he just decided to look "nice," which is just code for a certain kind of class performance and the most boring thing ever.

I'm almost certain I would've said the same thing before I got into clothes, too. Willfulness has always been a thing I've admired.

FTR, #menswear is definitely not my style, and I often find it kind of tedious and some manifestations of it are definitely reactionary. But that guy sounds great, or at least interesting.

>> No.8829841

>>8829795
Oh, and A) the first guy isn't prep, he's just watered down contemporary menswear, anyway, and B) I wrote all that before I realized everything in his outfit was *clashing shades of blue*.

Which, that could actually work, maybe, with the right pieces, attitude, grooming, and footwear. But yeah.

>> No.8829879

>>8829830

Fair enough, but the point I was making was that being a 'dandy' (of whatever style) is a thing to be avoided

I believe that clothing is form of self-expression - lack of effort and thought in how you dress reflects a non-self aware temperament and perhaps carelessness, whilst excessive preening and peacocking indicates an attention-seeking personality that most people will sub-consciously pick up and avoid. Prep is as much a lifestyle as a clothing style, and some of the 'preppiest' people I know think nothing of how they dress as it comes so effortlessly to them - an attitude that seems far more attractive and genuine than the 20-somethings trying so desperately hard to impress people with their grenadine silk pocket squares

>Prep is as much a lifestyle as a clothing style, and some of the 'preppiest' people I know think nothing of how they dress as it comes so effortlessly to them

Well, yeah, because they were raised, trained that way. If you're on here that's not you unless you're trying to escape it.

>attractive and genuine

Eh, genuine yeah, attractive is more complicated. WASP culture is beguiling and deeply fucked and sad, like most bourgeoisies.

I don't think most #menswear types are really trying to *impress* people. I mean, we all are, at bottom, and there's sometimes a competitive element to that world, but that's like saying people are training and playing sports at a highly developed level to impress people. They're not. They're doing it because they enjoy it.

Something I think is very, very important to realize when talking about the social dimension of getting dressed: you're not really looking to have the largest number of people unoffended to mildly impressed. What you really want is to interest and excite the people who interest and excite you.

Would you rather fifty people say "I'm okay with your presence" or five people say things like, "Who are you?" "I want you." "I need you."

>> No.8829959

>>8829890
What do you think philosophy or fashion is? It has everything to do with both.

The starting point of philosophy is "how should I live?" We're talking about how to get dressed inside the social system around clothes, fashion.

>> No.8830000

>>8829935

This is a good discussion, but I'm not quite sure what point we're actually arguing over- I would agree with most of your post, and I don't see how it conflicts with mine either

Dressing as you would like to dress is certainly a good attitude to have, regardless of your style or tastes (take nudists for example; no fucks given there)

The only caveat I would attach to that would be that in deciding how you want to dress, that style should be the most accurate self-expression possible (in whatever context) and people can tell when someone's a 'poser' or 'tryhard' very easily. By all means choose to dress to impress those 5 people (or have all 50 be "okay with your presence" if you're a politician), but that style of dress should be an effortless self-expression, not just what you think those 5 people will be most impressed by

prep is associated with the upper crust societies of the easy coast. It uses more bold colors and traditional english clothes like cricket sweaters, penny loafers, etc. The outfit you described could go either way based on colors and details

white oxford/gray fine knit sweater/olive chinos/leather sneakers would be more menswear

blue oxford/white & red cricket sweater/yellow chinos/penny loafers would be prep

Prep never left, that's it's beauty. The look has been around since the 20s, and if you want to define it as simply 'the fashion of the upper classes' then Roman times perhaps

Although certainly the Vampire Weekend circa 2014 look could take off - prep revised with millennial fits and tech

I.E. for A/W CPs, cuffed black or bleached jeans, white oxford, dark grey Shetland w/ black overcoat, good quality phone/laptop. Ezra's fits are consistently on point, and I think he'll become the icon of the new prep movement

Polo F/W 14 do a really nice Shetland. It does have elbow patches though (2010 as fuck) but those are easy to take off with a seam ripper (or tailor)

I have a couple from Genuine Scottish Knits. Cheap (£50), warm af but vanity sizing is a problem - I'm 6'3" with a rower's physique and the S is still slightly too large

MKI also do fuzzy Shetlands for £85. The quality is fantastic, and it's great product, but the sizing goes the other way - it's designed for a slim, small Asian build so I'd have to recommend trying them on first (I'm a large with them) if you're tall or w/ever

This.
Coming from the south, it's painfully easy to understand why Dandyism is the culmination of affectedness. These types (from personal experience) adapt to the climate of menswear for the effect of showiness and provocation. They bring no real intention or any true sense of cultivating personal style.

In any manner of dress, I think it is important to consider the type of dialogue (visually) that we have with people around us. What messages or ideas are conveyed when in the arrangement of my image?

Thanks! If you need a great OCBD, you HAVE to get a kamakura. If you're in NYC or Tokyo its best to try them on. I got myself one this summer in nyc and its the best OCBD I own: great quality/thick cotton, nice long collar with great roll, made in japan, all that for $80. They carry mostly "japanese sizes" though, so you better not be too big

>> No.8834631

I'll make sure to try some. Too be honest never really considered Gant. Too be brash i always saw it as a substitute for people who thought that Polo was too fashion forward. Thanks mate.

>>8834594

Well I'm a Brit so whilst I've heard good things of Kamakura, the shipping/returns would be too much of a hassle to make it worth it. And as you say, the sizing would be difficult for me in any case. Perhaps when I'm next in New York I'll look into it, I've also got York St. J press and the Thom Browne store on my list. Any other recommendations?

The Gant Yale oxfords are my go to; I have six now, in varying colours and patterns, and I have to say they've now become the staple of my wardrobe. Great fit and quality, as well as charming original features like the locker loop and straight fit (which is the perfect blend of masculine looseness and sartorial fit, at least on my build). Slightly more expensive at £80 here, but I haven't found anything better at any price

>> No.8834710

>>8834659
Maybe Brooks Brothers for university stripes shirts, because I think Gant doesn't have any and neither does kamakura. I was disapointed during my last in the USA not to be able to find a J.Press store, they clothed the nyc one and the new haven one too. Outside of nyc i wish i had the occasion to go to O'Connells in upstate ny and the Andover shop in cambridge, ma.

I feel the about the fit of gant yale shirts, kamakura are a slightly slimmer so that's nice for someone like me, but gant yale are usually my go to shirts too.
