You have to understand what Raf was all about back then. Counter culture, underground music culture of the 80s, stuff like that. He was really fascinated by the energy of youth, the destructivness of consumerism and government. You get things seasons like ss03 which is heavily focused in consumerism, brands, and their effect on us. I like Rafs new season but to say his older seasons are lame is completely wrong.

for conceptual impact ss02 is up there but as far as the clothes, styling and individual looks

aw03 is the best imo, this is something i wrote about it in another thread:

i think from a purely technical perspective, his best show was aw03. it was the perfect amalgam of what made raf so amazing.

exquisitely cut outerwear, immediately wearable sportwear, the seamless and powerful incorporation/tribute of an artist's work and vision whom he loved(peter saville) as well as an affectionate love letter to the subculture that gave birth to it all.

whats to discuss about his post 06 work? ss07, aw07, aw08 are passable, ss08 is decent, everything beyond that is turgid unwearable dreck.

this isnt some complaint about him abandoning youth influence or because he started doing more menswear styling, because aw03, ss05, aw05, ss06, aw06 were all rooted in tailoring, and yet those were amazing.

aw09 is probably one of the most disappointing shows in contemporary menswear.
