I did a rarish type of math major and now I have a job in software development gettin fat stacks. Highly recommended if you like programming.

Software development is a lot more than programming obviously, but enjoying programming is probably a good way to determine whether you'd like it as a whole.

Probably not too many comp sci departments teaching students how to write a batch file and contact the job scheduling team to set up a job that triggers the batch file at certain times on the test, pilot, and prod servers. The batch file also depends on the software you wrote which should work well if you did it right, but don't forget about shitty FTP that can also cause the job to fail.

Under promise and over deliver.

most colleges require internships for engineering (including CS, IS, etc) majors..it's actually a class that you need to graduate.

at my school, CS is entirely math based but they use programming languages to help us learn the math. they don't teach you how to do employer shit because that low level in comparison.

instead of teaching you how to do specific things, they teach you how to "think like a programmer" and teach yourself shit. if you want to be a codemonkey you can enroll in a community or technical college, but that means you'll never be very far on the totem pole.

True. Not trying to be one of those "this is how it is in the REAL WORLD" people. But when you start a job, just remember to not be too liberal with the tasks you take on. In IT, it's natural for people to come directly to you for help, but where I work there's a whole pipeline that prioritizes this stuff.

Basically I had issues with working on a project, and I would just keep adding things that the users requested. It's best to establish a clear goal and constantly try to be working toward "finishing" the project. Then, once it's "finished," you can keep creating new IT requests for their extra requirements. Makes you look better, and it gets (ideally) properly prioritized.

Ah, the "yes man".

If there's one thing that I learned on my internship, it's to time box EVERYTHING. From day 1 my supervisor emphasized logging my time in JIRA at the end of each day so that I became conscious of how long I would work on a certain task. This helped when some of the PM's/VP's would ask me to work on a feature and I'd have to say whether I can or can't do it within the two week sprint.

I mean, I'm good at talking to people and I speak a foreign language so it won't be that hard to do.

Hopefully I can just work at a library instead of being a teacher because it's where I've worked for 3 years now while in college.

Well from my experience I have always had a better time learning when the teacher/professor enjoyed teaching. With something pretty tricky like teaching English to nonnative speakers, I feel like that quality would be even more important. Good luck though

see I don't understand that at all. Why would you do a bachelor's in something like management. I don't think that you would be able to get a job in management right out of school so why not get some true technical knowledge. If I were in your shoes, I would flip those two around.

In response to this shit-flinging:
There are universities/educations which double the engineering and architecture, making it more about the technical math-shit stuff, and some universities/educations focus on the design and so on.
The one which mixes heavily with the engineering are the ones who end up being the people on the actual build site and the ones who have to make the design work and work with the main architect and tell the person whether something is going to work or not etcetera, whereas the other one is the creator of the idea and design, how the building is going to be placed, how it's going to look, what materials are going to be used (aesthetically), and also the interior design depending on what kind of building it is.
It's essentially like one is the fasion designer and the other is the person who creates the clothes.
