ok but consider this:
he's heading fucking Dior.
and doing a really fucking good job.

while it is true that for awhile now - since 09 , some would say aw06 was his last great show but i think ss08 was raf done right - rafs work for his own label has been lackluster, he has had successful stints at jil and now dior during that time.

and his poor contemporary form does not discredit his groundbreaking earlier work.

he was a genius, probably still is.

HOWEVER i do like dior. the only galliano dior collection i liked was ss11.
when raf took over mmm those mod blazers, elongated, sateen, subtle hip. no one shapes womens suits like that rn. I like that it's got a vintage feel but space age at the same time. that was the feel for the most recent couture show-- couture in space. his menswear is lacking idk maybe because he's at the helm of one of the most prestigious houses. he dont care about fuccbois rn. go buy jil or alex???

now talk about someone who is in no way innovative.
banning that one chick from T because she gave him too harsh a review and his feelings got hurt.
and then she dug on him AGAIN in the latest issue because he truly lacks innovation as agreed by anyone who has a head on their shoulders in the industry
http://tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/08/18/commercialization-of-high-fashion-hedi-slimane-ysl-nicolas-ghesquiere-louis-vuitton/?_php=true&_type=blogs&module=Search&mabReward=relbias%3Aw&_r=0

>"He has also defeated his critics, who no doubt sensed the futility of continuing to point out that he doesn’t seem to be trying very hard to be inventive. (In my own case, he banned me from Saint Laurent’s runway shows when I was this newspaper’s critic.) As Tim Blanks wrote last season on Style.com, “There is no longer any shock of the whatever in what he is offering.”

>"So why write about Slimane now? Here’s why: If you accept that fashion reflects the times — and I do — then you have to concede that in this respect Slimane has been impressive, even prescient. His Saint Laurent collections perfectly capture the mood and values of the present. The need for simple messages. The triumph of branding. The shortening of horizons due to economic factors. The lack of prejudice toward old ideas, especially among young consumers. I would never expect any designer to own up to such pessimistic motives. But neither do I assume that Slimane, with his gift for marketing, hasn’t thought about them."

he PALES to raf and really most other designers in the luxury game. he's too busy nursing on that rotting 90s california grunge placenta that he's been beating everyone over the head with.

i don't get why people are ragging so much.
sure it's predictable and it's not avant garde/cutting edge/new/original
BUT it's done very well. the pieces that don't have the animal print and too much studs are the shit.
so many designers have to be new original and different to stand out, so that it looks like you're not copying.
the reason why hedi can do it is bc he is already established. doesn;t have to rely on innovation he can just refine.
i love the slp image and dont give a fuck who doesnt.
who the fuck always needs ostentatious clothes?

like ok so it's a patent leather pointed toe pump. literally everyone makes those? but i got these because i liked the immaculate point, the 110mm heel and the 90 degree angle of the heel. it used to be hard to find before 2012

honestly Raf has never made anything I OMFG need

I tend to prefer "normal" looking clothes made with a blend of natural materials (wool, linen, or cotton blends) that are easy wearing and easy to pair in the socal summers and light winters

raf is known for his lackluster suiting (I was only interested for the extreme discount for a relatively cheap and plain suit)

or some of his shoes that have tumblr-esque nerd details

I bought some of his RAF X Fred perry shit mostly because I wanted some shit to bbq in or wear as beat up shirts and they were on sale at like $85 each so a handful of Raf X FP shirts weren't too much more than UNIQLO drivel that would only last me 8 months

his early work was revolutionary in a lot of ways, if you ignore the concepts, the presentation, the spectacle that a lot of those shows were and focus purely on the clothes theres a few things raf and helmut lang did that changed the landscape of menswear.

the suits of his 90's work were cut slim, much slimmer than what was standard at the time, rafs tailoring in the early years was sublime. narrow cut coats/pants/blazers shown on amateur young models picked off of the streets of antwerp was totally raw compared to the shlock a lot of his contemporaries were doing.

raf was also very obsessed with the conceptual nature of the work, subcultures, personas, art, and the clothes were often a medium upon which to express it and commemorate it. in other words the clothes took a backseat to the concept and expression of whatever he vizualised as the message.

i think from a purely technical perspective, his best show was aw03. it was the perfect amalgam of what made raf so amazing.

exquisitely cut outerwear, immediately wearable sportwear, the seamless and powerful incorporation/tribute of an artist's work and vision whom he loved(peter saville) as well as an affectionate love letter to the subculture that gave birth to it all.

its a magnificent show and i encourage anyone who likes raf to watch it here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hVu-kYvlgI

a lot of the knits in this show were so expensive there were less than 20 made, this one retailed for 6000 in 03.

has some good discussion. other than that the best way to learn i think is the shows themselves and firstview.com is the best for viewing most of the old ones.

the dazed and confused commemoration video is also worth a look. http://www.dazeddigital.com/fashion/article/9197/1/rafs-army-exclusive-fashion-film

online articles are good too, and youtube/vimeo have some collections as well.

hapsical seems like a nice person, i have bought some things off of him and he always ships fast and is courteous and polite.

he defended raf at a time when most were deriding him and benefited heavily from it. he also brought a lot of exposure to archive raf. i think he has done more good than bad.

i think he is done with fashion in general and moving on. he recently sold off most of his pieces like the pyramid and parachute bomber, the de stijl sneakers etc.
