I kind of want an Amphibia too, but the 2 vintage Russians I bought a couple months ago are completely fucked now (-/+ 10mn per day). And I have very little reason to expect better from a brand new Russian.

Chinese cheapies are out of the window too. Bought a Coca bezel diver, 18 dollars delivered, the first one arrived fucked, and the replacement stops when it needs to move the date.

In my shitty affordable collection, only Seiko does well. It doesn't entice to expand ones horizons.

I'm >>8706744 and I love nato straps. They can change the feel of a watch. Dress down a classier type watch, give an interesting one a little more 'pop', they're fairly cheap and dirt simple to switch out. I also find them far more comfortable than most straps, although there are some that absolutely hate them with a passion.

They have their uses for those who like them. I don't think every watch would look good on a nato, however.

That's actually a pretty decent comic.

If your lume is any good, you'll still be able to see it in the middle of the night. It may not be super bright, but you should be able to see it given that your eyes will detect contrast better when adjusted to the darkness. If your watch isn't getting enough light during the day to charge the lume, then I'd suggest spending some more time outside, away from the computer.

General principals of watches and straps, by Anon

> Proper dress watch - Always leather, black or dark brown. Never use a bracelet. Eg Calatrava

> Semi dress - dark to light brown leather, sometimes a bracelet. Some JLC reversos work. AP RO, Nautilus too.

> Sport - Bracelet or nato for summer, leather or nato for winter. Can't think of an example, but imagine something somewhat rugged, but not a diver.

> Subdued diver (Rolex Sub + many others) - Bracelet all the time. Sometimes a nato with neutral colours.

> Expensive tool diver (JLC spec) - whatever is provided

> Affordable (sub 2k) tool diver (this is everything that can't be dressed up and work with a shirt and tie, unlike the rolex sub) - Natos of all colours that match the watch in some way, distressed leather with big buckles, rubber straps. 5 ring ZULU works well too.

I've been getting more and more interested in watches lately. I have a cheap Timex at the moment, it serves its purpose, but I obviously want to take a step up from it. I know I could easily Google something like "best budget watches" (which I have), but I'd like some personal opinions because I'm sure we've all been at the point I'm at.

Anyways, what are some decent 'budget' brands/watches to start off with? Between $50-$150 is what I'm looking for right now, since I only just started my job a few months ago and need to be frugal. I'd like a suggestion on a nice casual watch, or maybe something that strikes a good balance between that casual/non-casual look. Anything with a canvas strap is fine, but I also really like brown leather straps. Thanks in advance.

There are literally hundreds if not thousands you can choose from.

An Orient Union is one you could consider. There's a white faced Orient Disk, you could go with a Mondiane for a funky-class styled look, there are a handful of Seiko 5 watches with a white dial, and the list goes on and on and on. More criteria is always a good thing, but really you can't go wrong with finding one you want and just buying it if you have a budget up to $500.

The most important thing when looking for a watch is the case size. No matter how much you like the design, if it's too big or too small, you're going to hate the way it looks on your wrist.

The second thing is to be specific in what you like.
>I want something dressy but can be worn down.
>Something classy and elegant with a leather strap.
Do you realize how retarded this sounds? These words are virtually meaningless because of their subjectivity. Why would you even bother mentioning the strap when you can always change that yourself? Browse around for things that appeal to you. Make a list. Be descriptive, for example:
>I'd like a dress watch, 35mm - 38mm, silver, cream, or white sunburst dial with dauphine/sword hands. Find consistencies between designs. If you can't describe it, you can always post a picture, or several.

In summary:
>1. Give case size preference in mm.
>2. Give style preferences.

That's Void 03D Copper/White, sort of Swedish design, made in China, quartz and mineral glass, so it's more an accessory than a timepiece.

I love the look of it though, the proportions, the color, the dial and the lack of logo.

The hands even have some lume (not much).

What's sort of strange about them is the numbers. I think 00-60 would be better on the outer circle and 1-12 on the inner, like on fliegers (B type), but it's nice as it is, too.

Just looking for input. I don't frequent /fa/ often. Getting married next summer, June, looking for groomsmn gifts. I'm thinking of getting them the Rodina small second. I've got a Stowa MO I'll be wearing, and I'd like to give them something similar without breaking my bank. Read that you can negotiate down the price on Rodina for multiple orders. I'm well aware of the mushroom branding of it, but most of my groomsmen aren't going to care. The only one that would likes it, and I've explained it's a Homage/knockoff of the $2000 Tangente, his only concern being the "China Made" at 6 o clock implied tackiness

So: Rodina Small second. Affordable Bauhaus styling, or too cheap to give as groomsmen gifts?

Is that the Techne with the Seiko Meca-quartz movement? I want to see one of those in person. If it handles like I hope, I could get a decent chronograph I don't have to re-buy every five years in service costs.

Yeah it is. My specific model has a slight issue on reset with the chronograph seconds hand where it doesn't reset to 12 dead on, usually a second past it and to fix I just start and reset the timer. But I've yet to hear of or see this issue in any other models. It's a great movement.

Any watch with the Seiko 6T63 aught to act just as you'd expect it to. The Meca-quartz chronograph is a really nice touch and makes it absolutely worth buying a quartz chrono.

Helgray Watches, a recent microbrand aught to be doing a Kickstarter for their next watch soon enough that'll use a meca-quartz movement. Domed crystal, about 42mm case diameter and no seconds hand to indicate it's a quartz, so when you start the chrono it'll go along at it's 1/5th second increments.

Also on that note, I wish they had done their Skyfighter model with a meca-quartz movement. It'd be much nicer than the lame tick that a standard quartz movement has on the chrono.

Regardless, it's a damn nice looking watch and I'm definitely looking forward to receiving it within the coming weeks.

Awesome. I'll look into that Helgray. I love that it has no running seconds.

This is the watch that got me into that movement. Autodromo Prototipo. Gorgeous 70s style, but a little pricey at around $600 for a quartz movement in steel and sapphire.

Is Seiko actually putting this movement in any of their own watches yet?

>>8725604

General consensus on Watchuseek is that settling in is a myth. Probably what happens in that "settling-in" period is that you start to firm up how you rest the watch.

That said, Seiko 5 watches are an entry-level mechanical watch and don't run as consistently as something more expensive. My Orange Monster ran about +6/d for two years, then started gaining 15 a day. I have a 5 dress watch that has run +8 consistently for three years. FWIW I rest both on their backs overnight. It's luck of the draw, man.

Don't worry, mate. I bought an Orient on a trip to Japan, wore it for three years, sold it for more than I paid for it in America. They're at least as solid as Seiko, and a little more unique. Yeah it's a nice touch.

I'd love to get myself any Autodromo, but like you I agree that $600 for a quartz chronograph is a bit much, although they do look absolutely beautiful. I think the price I paid for my Techne was worth it though, I'd been admiring it ever since it came out a few years ago.

Seiko does. I've been considering picking up a Seiko SSB031P1, definitely looks like a gorgeous sporty styled watch. Pretty reasonable at around $140.

You get them in watches starting at 100$ on Rakuten...

And around his 330$ budget Orient gets kind of iffy, because you almost get a Orient Star like the WZ0031DV, which is in terms of finish nowhere near a comparable SARB at the same price point. Just compare the bracelets or all the brushed parts on the SARB while the WZ is just all polished.

Granted both watches are slightly above his budget, but you can't just go ahead and say orient is undoubtedly the best for him.
