so quick question

I assume most of you guys work and are currently going to college

how do you even afford this shit
do your parents buy you $300 jeans and $500 boots for every day?
or do you live paycheck to paycheck, saving everything to buy clothing

I dont understand how somebody would live like a drug addict to get a shirt that looks like any other shirt and will be shitty at roughly the same time, but are willing to pay ten times the cost because MUH BURANDO

i seriously fucking doubt somebody with a professional career gives a shit about this asinine tripe past a suit

looking past all the threads up, most of them are about shoes, some about fuccboi's, "should i spend $2,000 USD for a leather jacket??" and other things that are covered in the sticky

god no, if my parents knew how much my balmain jeans or my multiple pairs of geos cost me they'd probably lose their shit. I don't tell anyone how much I paid for things, if people know, they know.
>live paycheck to paycheck
I honestly make enough money through working to live very comfortably in a communal house with friends of mine, and I make enough extra + I buy and sell enough clothes to be able to afford a handful of new pieces every month or so.

I assume that a lot of people are on this board because clothing is their hobby. this is true for me too. I have friends that spend hundreds of dollars on tricking out their car, or playing in magic drafts, or smoking a shit ton of weed. all of these are things that aren't necessarily financially feasible, and you could make an argument against each of them in the same way you've spoken about clothing.

the fact of the matter is, a lot of people just enjoy hunting down grails on the internet. it's a good feeling finding something you've been looking for forever, and an even better feeling when that package gets to your doorstep. a lot of people don't even keep most of their purchases and continually cycle them out to keep their wardrobe fresh (to themselves at least) and once you sink enough money into it, you can keep this going for a pretty long time by selling to buy more with minimal cost to you.

I'm sure a lot of people actually don't dress for other people, even though you guys like to poke fun at that kind of shit. it's very easy to throw on a mall-brand oxford and some skinny jeans and clarks and look well put-together to virtually any pedestrian female, and if that's simply what we wanted, then that'd be the route we'd take. a lot of us border on obsession mixed with varying levels of self confidence and that's really what makes this whole thing tick.

I cant comment on acne jeans in specific, but the material in designer jeans is usually softer and is visibly more fine, even if nothing else is changed. It's very subtle in pictures, but there's a distinct difference that you can notice if you put designer jeans side by side some levi's.

I got desperate 2 years ago because I had to pay 2k$ to my dealer, otherwise he'd have beaten my two front teeth out (he did that shit to some other junkie to show not to mess with him)

I told that story to a gay friend of mine. He asked me if I'd fuck him for 1k. Really had no other choice, it was either that or being the plaything to a sociopathic drug dealer.

Through that friend I met other gay guys whom I regularly fuck for money.
As of now I only have 3 very wealthy clients. I always use a condom, never suck a dick and never receive the dick. I tell myself that it's not gay this way.
I make 15k$ per month to pay for my cocaine addiction, an apartment, my girlfriend and clothes.
I really have to look for a job, because two of them seem to lose interest in me.

I don't understand this. You ask for what purpose, but then mock what many of us actually feel is the answer.

I like the clothes I buy, I get a good feeling from buying and wearing them. I could spend $15 on a Tee from H&M, but I don't like the brand, quality, or design. I like the design of Rick and Damir Doma's $150 long tees. I think they look cool, feel great, and I have a bit of brand loyalty to them. I get pleasure from searching around for different pieces from shows. I enjoy learning about the pieces, the construction, the designer and brand, the meaning behind the shows of say Undercover or CDG.

I CANNOT ever find pieces with the exact same feel, quality, and look of many designers I like. As much as you want to spout bs and say that H&M does sheer tees, they'll never be the same. Maybe you don't notice the difference but I do. I see the slight variation in the collar, the feel is actually different, the length, the way it fits on the body. I notice these things, and I therefore decide to spend the extra money to get the clothes I think are superior.

I get a good feel from copping grails. Buying items I've been looking for for a long time. Maybe they have no value to others, or are overpriced in others eyes...they aren't to me.

I get a good feeling when I win an auction after a bidding war w/ someone else. I enjoy going to shops and discussing brands, shows, designs, designers, ideas, and concepts related high fashion with the store employees. You usually never get to do that at a mall store, the employees are more likely to have less knowledge of fashion.

So essentially, it's a hobby and something I truly get enjoyment from. Paying more or less for clothes isn't the point, because the price doesn't matter much anymore. If I like an H&M tee, I'll buy it. But if I prefer a rick tee, I'm going to dish out the extra quiche for it, because it's worth it to me and it grows my hobby.

It's not about looking like a special snowflake for me.

It's my hobby. I like fashion. I like clothes. I always have, even when I was preteen. It's fun for me. It's more fun to spend a day walking around from designer shop to designer shop than to go to an amusement park because I really like fashion.

Why is OP trying to make my hobby seem like a waste of money.

I don't judge people who collect trains, or buy hundreds of video games. They enjoy it, and if it doesn't rape their bank account than who cares.

OP seems to think I/we dress for others. I don't, it's all for me. I don't even see people that often, but I own tons of designer shit because I like it.

I work full-time as a manager, go to school online, and shop a lot of sales (both online and off). My most recent cop was a pair of N&F Weird Guys from Gilt for $75, which is still below retail and not more expensive than something from Gap, for example. When it comes to copping pieces, I buy pieces that will last me for a long time, such as raws and better quality leather so that they can age better than a cheap pair of Wranglers or some cheap shit than Wilson's Leather. I don't sacrifice my quality of life or live like a peasant to cop clothing, but I'm not trying to live like a slob either.

Thankfully, my "style" can be pulled off quite cheaply. I actually own shit from asos. And I wear it. Thankfully none of it is the sort of thing that looks specifically asos-tier though. Also op-shops tend to have a lot of the stuff I want most. It's pretty rare for me to see clothing by high-end designers that impresses me much. So yeah I can pay for college and satisfy my fashion needs.

Only thing is, I need a new pair of black jeans and that will definitely put a dent in my wallet. Can't really find anything cheap that I want.
