Is there any way for a now older (26) aspiring accountant and college student to keep his angsty teenager days a little bit alive and still get away with wearing lots of black and possibly even doc martins while still presenting a somewhat clean and dependable image (important for accountants)?

Had the same dilemma as you OP: I'm afraid the answer is no unless you play in an edgy rock band. otherwise you will look like a trashy guy who has't outgrown his teen punk/goth/metal phase.

What I'm doing is going for a monochrome black n' gray look to look "dark" but I've ditched all fetish and punk accessories and biker gear

I don't wanna run into someone from my school or college years and him/her be all "OMG you still dress like a rocker? you haven't changed a bit!"

Yeah, I've certainly ditched the over-the-topness of it, but now I look like kind of a slob. Losing weight has helped, but I do really like combat boots and black or dark grey shirts (I'm comfy evening it out a bit with lighter pants). But I really got to step up my game and I'm not sure how to reconcile antiestablishmentarian with safe, smart, andpractical. Guess I should bite the bullet and just buy khakies or something.

You don't have to go dadcore though. What I'm trying to do is wear slim-fitting black clothes that are mature yet have an alternative flair to them.

Try black jean and chinos, tees with subtle band logos or occult images, black shirts and leather jack and coats or bombers.

Footwear I recommend black boots (combat or old-timey work boots) and black canvas shoes.

Try experimenting with various hairstyles and see which one looks alternative enough yet presentable for work environment

it's not like you have to look professional 24/7. you can always cut loose and rock out on the weekends.

also try asking around to find out about your local underground music scene for cool bars or clubs that cater to alternative scenes or music shows

you can only pull off this look if you are also an IT specialist. many accounting firms, small and large, actively seek accountants that have IT training. it solves two problems with one hire. (this is a protip for anyone these days... if you have any IT specilization, make sure your resume says so. I'm currently getting my teaching certification and even they see it as a bonus)

When it's done right and tasteful you can get away with anything.

Consider finding a "uniform" and buy various pieces you can mix and match to wear all the time.

For instance, the pants in pic back to a fitted black button up and a well fitting blazer, or ditch the blazer and wear a tie.

Ditch the combat boots though.

OP, just own it. If that's how you want to look then go for it. The whole "LOL u R too old to look lyk that!' mentality is kind of immature in itself. I don't know what you're into edge wise, punk, goth , metal, whatever (you seem more punk to me) but if that's the case there's no wrong way to do it.
