I'm trying to get into buying higher quality clothes over mall shit (forever 21 mainly) and I don't know where to start. I don't want to just get random pieces that I like that don't go with much. I want to get like a good basic platform and go from there. Any reccomendations?

Sticky.

I kinda remember a similar discussion a while ago, which was mainly about fem fashion working differently than male fashion.

Latter one works okay with just a relatively small number of interchangable / combinable pieces.

Whereas in fem. fashion, it's apparently more important to change pieces often and repeat looks as little as possible. Therefore it makes more sense to go for cheaper, more disposable pieces.

At least that was a consensus, doesn't necessarily mean you needa agree.

Start with buying clothing for the season.

Summer? Get some nice tanktops, nice airy low-scoop t-shirts, shorts, skirts, etc.

Want shit to go together? Before you go out, look through your wardrobe, and pick something like your favorite shirt, or a piece of clothing that you have that you haven't been able to pair with much. Then, while you shop, look for pieces that you think would go with it. Don't just shop mindlessly.

what does higher quality mean to you? what's your current price range and what would you be willing to expand it to? e.g. from $30 for a skirt to $60 for a skirt?

> I think I have my own style kinda. I really like black and grey scale things and I like that kinda minimalist and simple look even tho my fits don't always follow that. I usually don't wear over 3 colors in an outfit uhhh a lot of my clothes are tumblr girl core :'( (pacsun, forever 21, American eagle)

do you have designers/brands that roughly are in the style you like? e.g. if you like helmut lang, rag & bone

are you ok with having fewer clothes of higher quality, given that you have a limited amount of money?

i'd say the first thing to do is to figure out what kinds of items you want for the look you're trying to achieve, and try to establish a cohesive set of things to buy

>> No.8575501

>>8575422
nordstrom is variable.

if you want to develop your own style you have to stop shopping at stores and start shopping everywhere for specific things.

nordstrom has a variety of good and bad stuff and a variety of styles. they sell mediocre badly-cut tees along with t by alexander wang. it's hard to generalize.

but you're not going to be able to just go into a store, even one with a distinct style and aesthetic and reliable quality, and walk out with a few great outfits if you don't know what you want.

>> No.8575524

>>8575495
I'd be willing to pay like 60 for a skirt, 100+ for pants 100+ for good shoes. I know I know that's not a super high budget but whatya expect. it's better than what I'm used to spending. I'd spend more on like really nice shoes or like a coat or something
I know that'd I'd have fewer higher quality items and I'm fine with that.
I don't know any specific designers that I like but I'll search around later.

>>8575501
I understand what you mean. it's just hard to know if I'll actually like some things when I can't even try it on.

>> No.8575589

>>8575524
that's a reasonable budget, especially if you shop for a lot of stuff on sale

i would also suggest you start saving inspo pics of the style you want to have so you have a good sense of what you're converging towards and what pieces are missing to look like that. you might collect a bunch of images and realize you can do a lot with a black ankle boot, or something, and then you have a target thing to buy.

definitely shop irl just to get a sense of different design details and cuts and shapes and silhouettes you like/dislike and what looks good on you

>> No.8575643

>>8575589
Thanks. I'll definitely try and remember to save more inspo pics.
I don't have many higher end stores around me :/ ill have to search for some good stores

I think womens basics should be:
- slim fit pants
- knee lenght/mid thigh shorts
- basic tees
- shirts or blouses
- structured jacket or blazer
- low top smart casual shoes (oxfords, smoking slippers, ballet flats etc.)
- chelsea boots
- winter coat

All of these is neutral shades (white, black, grey, beige, brown, nude) so mix and match is never an issue. This is just a template, if you're a e.g. a skirt girl, you can of course replace pants with skirts or add a little black dress to the collection; if you prefer tank tops over tees, so be it. The goal with this capsule wardrobe is to suit both casual and moderately formal situations.
