hey /fa/

I haven't had a proper haircut in about 10 years, so I have long ass dreadlocks now (yes I'm black). I shave the sides and back so it looks good, but I am getting tired of it and want to change it, but I don't want to cut them all.

What I'm asking is for inspo for "normal" haircuts that incorporate dreadlocks in them. I only have pic related. Thanks

Natty dreads form by not combing your hear, so they knot and form dreads. I guess you can fabricate them using combs or other methods for style, but that kind of ruins the point of the dreadlock.

Oh ok. Well yeah, that's how mine formed, and it's not as easy as just waiting for them to magically turn into dreads. You have to wait for months until they knot enough, but they clump into one big mass, so you have to carefully pull them apart (and it hurts like a motherfucker too)...and then wait another 3-4 years until they get past the Chief Keef phase

Having said that, having the same haircut for 5 years its kind of boring. While I like them, I want to try something different but at the same time keep some of it

Rastas don't effect their dreadlock growth either and just let them grow however, but I guess ultimately this is all for aesthetic anyways so whatever. I just don't get it, personally. I have a huge obnoxious and nappy looking afro myself after not cutting my hair for five-ish years and wouldn't ever consider shaving off a part of my head.

Because while I like my dreadlocks, I need a job. And I didn't shave any dreadlocks off, what I am shaving is the area where dreadlocks don't grow (head temples and back of neck). If dreadlocks aren't growing in there it just looks disgusting and unkempt. The hair grows up to a point and the contour of your hairline looks like a mess

I was saying that natty dreads are a consequence of not giving a fuck, not all dreads ever. There are obviously ways to manipulate hair growth to get desired results. I was trying to express that natural "free form" dreadlocks are formed from "neglect." That seems like the most intuitive way to get them. Any other method is decidedly "giving a fuck," as you have to at least give a modicum of a fuck to effect natural dreadlock growth.

I just asked why someone would have dreadlocks yet shave a portion of their head, since on the face of it that seems to go against the reasons people have dreadlocks in the first place. Or at least natural dreads, as I clarified. I never at any point said that anything but natural dreads are wrong, or anything of the sort. I just didn't understand wanting them. I never at all claimed that you're doing something wrong for having anything but freeform dreads, for shaving a part of your head, or that you're inferior or anything of the sort. I only mentioned the "fucks given" thing to help make a distinction between natty and non-natty dreads, but clearly I should have used less innocuous terminology.
