So, the /fa/ wiki says don't build your wardrobe on outlets like H&M, Old Navy, Gap, BR, AE, or department stores like Dillard's, Macy's, JCP.

My question is, what's wrong with this shit? Sure, you get what you pay for. But my entire wardrobe is clothes from the mall. I've had everything for well over a year and a half and it all still looks and feels brand new. The occasional lose string sure, but I just snip that off with some scissors.

Seriously, if it's bad to make my wardrobe from these places, then WHERE THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSED TO SHOP?

I'm convinced whoever made the "stores" section is retarded. What the fuck is wrong with these places?

it's kind of like if you eat mcdonalds your whole life then think to yourself WTF IS WRONG WITH MCDONALDS IT'S PERFECTLY FINE

Nothing bad with those other than child slavery and third qorld explotation, but that is for moralfags.

However if you ever happen to buy a genuine designer piece you will start seeing flaws in your mall friendly clothing, like cut, fit, feel, etc
Something similar happens when you see an atractive and fit movie star irl and compare her with ur gf or any other mildly cute girl you have ever known.

It's because for the most part if you're starting /fa/ you have horrible shit taste and you will most likely gravitate towards the terrible stuff.

All the moralfags trying to say that Slave labor is bad are also the ones that think Flyknits are the shit too. If you know a few things about fit + tailoring and coordination you could always wear 1 H&M or BR piece without looking like a massive cunt.

Macy's & JCP stock decent items at times too, but keep in mind if you have shit taste you'll gravitate towards most of the shit items which would make your time here a waste.

a lot of the stuff i've bought from malltier stores has glaring quality flaws. I've returned a sweatshirt to H&M because the forearms got permanently stretched out after i pushed them up to my elbows one day. The shirt I got from Old Navy has sort of "shrivelled" at the edges and looks pretty weird. I would say just stick to Uniqlo for basics and spend a little extra buying outerwear and shoes from trusted brands.

It's all about balance. If you know how to shop and what to look for, you can find good pieces anywhere. H&M is generally going to be shit quality, but I bought some pants there back in April that are great. They're super light and breezy and, despite what I was worried about, haven't worn through at the crotch yet despite the fact that I bike a lot and wear them at least once a week, usually twice. H&M is also good if you need a last-minute fast-fashion suit and don't have very much money to spend.

Department store stuff usually fits like shit and is often overpriced for the quality, but again, if you know how to shop, you can find good stuff. Then just get it tailored.

Think about the quality that you need for certain items. A couple t-shirts that you're going to be sweating and biking in aren't going to be worth spending $120 on, no matter how godly the drape is. Just go to American Apparel and spend $25 on something that fits great and isn't made by kids in Bangladesh.

On the other hand, you may want a knit sweater that will be warm but breath well, fit great, and not unravel after a month, in which case, it's probably worth going to that boutique run by those two hip early-30s dudes and spending $240 on a Norse Projects knit.

Is what you're looking for a staple or an accent piece?

What it boils down to is think about how you're going to wear things, what your priorities are. Learn to look for quality, learn to focus on how things fit, and think about what kind of wear you'll get out of things, how much wear and tear or relative care they will be subjected to, think about what is and isn't easily replaceable, what will and won't be abused, and then go out there and look for good cops anywhere and everywhere.

Whether that's fast fashion outlets, curated boutiques, ASOS/other online stores, malls/department stores.... figure out what you're looking for and shop with focus and care.

The problem is not that their clothes are going to fall apart but more a question of fit, material and taste. These places are aimed for the general public. The general public doesn't give a fuck about clothing. Give a walk on the street. Do you think the average man you see out there has thought for more than a couple of seconds what he was going to wear that day? Do you think he took more than that couple of seconds to decide wether he should buy or not the clothes he's wearing? Nope.

There's no problem with that. They can do whatever they want to. But you should aim for something better.

Oh, not saying you can't find good pieces in those places. But it will be hard.

Buying cheap overseas products sends capital overseas.

You are making that worker, that factory owner, and that country wealthier.

If you buy American / European / Canuck you are supporting workers in less need of capital.

Not buying sweatshop is a fashion statement that kills.

>> No.8514077

>>8513989
I'm not sure you know what capital means in this context. Additionally, your sentiment is misplaced.

The problem with sweatshops is that factory owners pay their workers far less than is deserved and the working conditions are dangerous and often inhumane.

The reason to buy from within your own country is that it keeps the money within your economy and stimulates local business growth and employment. You should not feel bad about robbing a little Indian kid of his 50¢, you should feel good that Joe Schmo down the street can run his family clothing business on your dollars and provide jobs for Westerners who have 'progressed' to thinking office jobs at the expense of making tangible products. America, for example, imports almost everything and exports next to nothing besides natural resources and software. The country will eventually fail because it has become non-self-sustaining. It's too reliant on the workforce of developing nations with unstable governments and infrastructure.
