Should dress shoes in the office have a high shine, or look as natural as possible?

High shine shoes tend to look like cheap shoes with corrected grain, so theres that point as well....

Don't ever get black wingtip

Also, I feel it depends on your job and the shoe... But generally it should have very little shine I feel. Just enough to look like you care for the shoe and bring it out, not so much that people fear you when your out in the sun or use your shoes as a mirror

funny because i asked around at my uni's careers and employment office and they all told me that black is perfectly fine for work.

I got the exact same response when i asked at my workplace, my boss and all my co-workers told me that black suits are fine for work.

Maybe you are the one in the wrong?

Black is typically reserved for formal wear. Wingtips are informal. You shouldn't get black wingtips.

Dress shoes should be polished to your liking. The less shiny, the more casual they are going to look.

This is a fashion thing perpetuated by the idiots here and other fashion places that like to parrot ideas.

I work as a management consultant so I see people wearing suits daily and people wear black here in the US. I personally don't because I'm kind of pasty so I don't want to create that stark contrast but it is not unusual for people to wear black suits in the US.

This idea that you are making some fashion faux pas by wearing a black suit is silly.
