Add an extra zero or 2 and that's about right. Bear in mind a modern day PP Perpetual Calendar Chronograph is £118,000

>>8437626
why is that expensive can someone explain

>> No.8437638

>>8437628

A Patek Philippe is expensive in it's own right because of the heritage (first ever wristwatch), there still a family run business (the Stern's) and they only make 50,000 watches a year.

A perpetual calendar chronograph is one of the the most complicated model they make. It has the 30 day months and February complication as well as the leap years complication which should be consistent until 2100.

On top of this you have a chronograph and in the case of the new 5270, it is an in-house calibre.

Vintage Pep Cal Chronos such as the 2499 fetch well over a $million at auction.

It's rarity + craftsmanship + beauty + precious metals.

You won't find much of the "minimalist" style there. Anything below $100 that is relatively water proof would be some kind of diver model.

Minimalist style watches are usually a more dressy style. I basically never see ones that are also waterproof. Good luck with that.

If you're willing to toss the waterproof part out, you can get a Rodina, which is a Chinese Nomos homage. It's $120. Very good looking.

Hey man, np. It's just kind of the standard warning to people that you shouldn't take WR markings literally. It's one of those things where you really want to have more than you need, and that's kind of "understood" to those in the know. If you're REGULARLY swimming or anything, especially to anything more than 10ft, you want a diver. The lower WR ratings really just mean that it will be fine through rain and stuff and can take the "roughest" that daily life would throw at you.

That said, something like that very well might work. I just want to warn you that if you're constantly putting it in that kind of environment then you shouldn't be surprised if it gets fucked.

I'd try Getat. It takes awhile to get it, but I've heard good things. Parnis, on the other hand, is not a singular entity. It's confusing, but basically no one actually owns the brand and it's a bit of a free for all. You can strike gold with them, but it appears that you're taking just a little more of a gamble. Getat, on the other hand, is one guy putting together the watches.

Don't get turned off: I have seen lots of successful Parnis buys. But just know that I have also seen quite a few comments that it is more on the "caveat emptor" side. In either case, you should do your research on places like watchuseek to see what the feedback is.

All of that said, Getat specifically does some great Panerai homages and you can choose exactly what parts you want (i.e., choosing from a selection of dials, hands, etc.). I'd recommend looking there. In fact, I'm looking into getting one for myself. Just a little leery of the large size (you can choose a case size, but these are all >40mm because they're Panerai homages).

>> No.8441185

>>8441109
don't bother with Getat. Its a lot of fucking around just for a homage of a watch one that you probably wont want to wear that often as Panerai's are incredible limited in terms of versatility.

just look up manbushije, go to his site and find one you like. they're all relatively cheap. then its a matter of waiting for the cheap chinese postage.

But trust me putting the time and effort into a Getat watch just to get a homage that can't adapt well to surroundings is a bad thing. The whole point of Panerai is to be big flashy and noticeably. Which is ok when wearing the legit piece as they use the utmost best materials.

But you'll simply look like a fuckwad wearing a homage panerai most of the time, especially if there is anyone that knows a thing a or two about watches around. They have the same heft and bulk to them, minus the fit and finish and end up just looking like a massive compensation strapped to your wrist so as to not disconcert you while you sit there fapping naked in a bathtub alone with your small cock in hand.

I've never been rich, nor have I been poor, but I never had money to spare before. So always went straight for the very best value, even if I had to save up for it a little longer.

Now I'm earning good money (surprisingly while I'm still at university). I've fulfilled pretty much every wish I had before with a value attitude of looking for the very best and find something with sort of good value in the sort of vicinity.

Anyhow with watches it's a different matter entirely. On the one hand they don't depreciate like the 10k I recently spent on electronics, on the other hand I only get a prettier watch out of it, without the added functionality, so I might as well just get something prettier and be done with it. Yet for some reason I'm drawn to the Omega Black Ceramic SMP, which is a ridiculous amount of money for my former self, who could buy a great many things for that.

>How do you guys justify spending so much on watches?

At this point, I'm just telling myself that it could be my last resort money and that's the excuse I'm going with, when my parents come over unannounced.

Agreed.

However, Anon, I'm obligated to tell you that that specific SMP is ridiculously overpriced. It's a way bigger premium than it really should be. That said, the classic SMP is something like $3.5k and a pretty good value. Or you can get one of the newer, automatic ones for a price in between the two.

But it's really all about getting what you like. If that's the watch you love, go somewhere where you can try it on. If it really speaks to you, get it and you won't be disappointed. It's all about making yourself happy. If you actually have the money to spend in a way that won't harm you financially, feel free.

Good luck!

Thanks, solid advise but I have to anyway since I have 6.3 inch (16cm) wrists and fear that the full-size might be a little too big and the mid-size will definitely be too small.

As for the SMP, yeah I miss the waves on the dial, on the other hand with the last gen and it's applied markers the dial became a little crowded, I feel. Will try to look at it in person as well though.

People will tell you Invicta sucks (as the previous replies have mostly borne out). For the most part, this is very true. HOWEVER, this is the one Invicta that I would recommend (specifically the 8926OB). For $80 you get a decent watch with a very solid Seiko NH35A movement. It's an automatic movement that both hacks and is hand-windable, which is an amazing value at that price point.

If that is all you're willing to spend, it is a very good choice. However, I strongly suggest that you look away from Invicta when getting other watches in the future. If you end up spending any more money on watches, save up just a little bit and get something nicer. Invicta is not looked kindly upon by most watch people, and their homages are very, very, close likenesses.

It's a great watch to introduce yourself to automatics with, or just to have something for very cheap. Once you get past the blind Invicta hate, you'd be surprised how often this watch gets recommended among the diver watch community. It's also a really great base to use for mods, if you want to get into that.

The first reply in that forum thread is actually very indicative: they have a few good value models and many people start out with them. If you're okay with what they are then they can be great. Just look somewhere else after/at higher prices. I've only read a little of it, but it seems like a pretty good thread with level heads that explain it pretty well.

Just remember that the best watch is the one that you enjoy.

old thread. remember that the 8926 they're talking about there uses a miyota movement. the new one is significantly better. also, the cyclops is good now. point being, several recommended it before and it's been improved on now. a surprisingly good value watch, honestly.

Dude be cool, how do you even know he lives in the US? Which I somewhat doubt given the time he posted and with importing it's a good deal wherever he is.

That you don't like the SKX I can understand, but the alternative in this scenario is a fucking Invicta, please enlighten me how that would be better than an in-house movement, original design and pretty good craftsmanship.

The good thing is that manual wind watches can just sit in a drawer every day. As long as you wind it once a month it will probably last forever*.

With your smart phone thing the batteries would suffer horribly under such treatment, but that won't matter too much since you'll just buy a new one with your next phone (or the one after) anyway because it has longer battery life, better screen or better CPU.

Don't compare mechanical watches to these abominations

You don't need a 200m ISO diver to swim. Your average department store watch with 50m water resistance is going to be fine for years of swimming.

You can buy a new smartwatch for the price of getting a mechanical chronograph serviced.

Unless you're getting into Patek territory, manufacturers phase out parts production for their mechanical watches. You think Rolex will service a 60s-era Submariner? Hahahaha...no.

You're going to be questing the world for parts and somebody to work on your mechanical in a couple of decades.

If you like it and you can afford it, go for it. The benefits of manual wind are imaginary.

I never said that, but water resistance is not a permanent attribute on any watch. You can find this information in every watch manual ever written.
Especially chlorine and salt can deteriorate water resistance.

Also I'd take a 10bar watch for swimming. With 5bar you are really pushing it in the long run since the movement of swimming puts additional pressure on weak points.

>>8452251
Omega guarantees to service 20 years after they discontinue a movement. And the Omega service generally sucks, so I'd assume Rolex would do 40 years?
Or take Seiko for example, you can use parts of the 6R15 to service a 7S24 for example.

But are you honestly arguing that you would wear that smart crap for more than two, maybe three years? It will be antiquated by then.

Dynamic overpressure is a myth. You can't move your arm fast enough underwater to equal even one additional atm of pressure.

http://forums.watchuseek.com/f2/sigh-myth-busting-again-610734.html

If a company is telling the truth about its water resistance, 50m is more than enough for a non-diver. If they're lying, that's something else entirely.

And yeah, you are supposed to replace seals every few years.

I'm both posts you're responding to, by the way. And I wouldn't wear a smartwatch at all. I'm an actual diver and wear a 2824-based boutique diver. I expect I'll have to service it with Sellita parts in the future though. I'm pretty okay with that.

50 meters is enough for any recreational diver since you aren't allowed to go below that while breathing regular tank air. and you wouldn't want to since light is significantly reduced beyond that so there's really no point. technically you aren't even supposed to go passed 40m depending on your certification. I've been to 50m with a padi junior license even though you're only allowed to go to 30m kek.

He's talking about HIS certification, not his watch's. It doesn't have one since there are no ISO standards for 50M water resistance.

The point of getting a watch marked "diver's" if you're going to dive (and for some reason I can't imagine aren't going to use a computer) is that the "diver's" mark means that individual watch on your wrist has been pressure tested to its rated resistance.

If you don't have that mark, it means a few watches from that production batch were pressure tested. Yours probably isn't the one.

My watch actually isn't marked "diver's" but frankly I trust Bill Yao more than a faceless inspector at a factory somewhere.
