being niche does open up some room for those chemists to be a bit more experimental (not that there isn't experimental designer scents, e.g. CdG) and since fragrances are the main focus of those companies, they can spend more for better ingredients. designer scents have a bit of a synthetic tinge more often than higher-end niche scents in my experience

I have heard they're are things such as these cologne should only be worn in the winter, what happens if i wear it in the summer? Would it smell worse or something?

>> No.8450943

It's not just niche frags, but any frags can become overbearing when it's hot out. typically avoid anything that has a balmy, boozy, or incense quality to it, i.e. heavy scents.

citurs, floral, and light woody notes are the typical jumping off points for summer.

How about winter? is sweet vanilla appropriate? such as the pi from givenchy?

>> No.8450970

>>8450947
Yeah, I'd a sweet vanilla fragrance would be good for winter. No direct experience with Pi, though.

Just try to consider if it gives you a warming sensation if you smell it (it obviously doesn't, but it puts that idea into you head). Some fragrances remind me of a cozy sweater or a living room heated by fireplace.

When in doubt, there's always Fragrantica or Basenotes for second opinions. Fragrantica especially has users rate which season they feel scents are most appropriate for.

Yeah, it's honestly a dumbed-down version of Black Orchid since Tom Ford's fragrances became more mainstream. It has some black truffle but the drydown of Velvet Orchid is just generic vanilla.

It has some interesting notes (rum, honey, smoke, suede at the base) that I think could have been explored better or deepened but as it is now the middle blast of boring florals takes it down a few notches.

Calling it "velvet" maybe indicates that it's soft, but I don't think it's anything original. I think its target audience is "women who shop at Sephora (at least at VIB level) and are looking for something unoffensive that makes them feel sexy. Also they have have heard that song by Jay-Z in a disgusting club once, after which they googled Tom Ford and realized they couldn't afford any of his clothing."

>> No.8460421

black orchid is way too fucking sweet
lately I look through my frags and can't decide I just put on xeryus which is salty soapy neutral. Gives me a windy overcast day at the beach feel. My friend though said it reminded her of washing semen off your hands with dollar store soap.
defs worth having in your wardrobe imo

Went to the store today to try Versace Eros, tried it on paper and it smelt a lot like axe/lynx body spray n reminded me a lot of the scent "1 million" (I hate axe and 1 million) I thought maybe I'd spray a bit on my chest just to see if it would smell different on skin and it was literally the biggest mistake of my life, got a head ache 5 minutes after doing this and then felt very sick like I was going to throw up and got A headache, when I got home I tried washing it off with soap and it didn't get rid of the smell, I ate dinner and then threw it up afterwards because I could still smell this fragrance... I'm literally standing in the shower right now with a headache trying to remove this smell
