I'm looking for a nice pair of casual boots that don't cost a fortune. Any recommendations?

What are some of the different styles of boots? I like the ones in pic related, but I also like the shorter Ryan Gosling style ones. It looks like he wears Stacey Adams boots.

the ones you posted and the ones you mentioned are both not going to be great leather quality

the quality of the leather will really make a difference not only with how the boots look and feel but also how gracefully they age and how long they last

I don't know what your definition of "a fortune" is but anywhere from 250-500 is a good starting point for boots.

some brands to consider are Red Wing, Alden, Wolverine 1000 Mile, Tricker's, Oak Street Bootmakers, Yuketen, and Chippewa.

If you're into the look of doc martens, they're also an option, and much cheaper

I checked out all of those brands. I like Tricker's the most, followed by Oak Street Bootmakers, but they're really expensive. It looks like you need to place a custom order for Trickers.

I'm looking for more of a slim silhouette, like in the first and second pics.

Not the best, but for reference their stuff is at least several notches above DM in quality, and a bit lesser than Red Wing. I've had a pair of their Arkansas boots that have lasted 4+ years. Pretty good leather quality and made inAmerifat. I like these boots.

>Oak Street Bootmakers
I've posted on these before and so have others so I can't bothered to repeat (check the archive) but this company is worth researching a bit more so that you reconsider wanting them. I would say go to styleforum and read their affiliate thread but they had it deleted because they couldn't handle the criticism of their quality. That should tell you enough about what sort of operation they run.

>trickers
Trickers are great. I had a pair of thei dress shoes when I was younger. Very well made. As for their boots like the Stow etc., they're really very clunky. I mean unbelievable from pictures. You have to try them on and they're like spaceboots.

You don't need custom orders, just look at some english online shoe retailers like pediwear or shoehealer or herring shoes for RTW options. They'll have more variety than End.

If you're in the US could can track down a pair of Allen Edmonds Daltons for varying prices.

Best value/quality ratio is Red Wing heritage line, the designs may be wanting though.

Hey there, not OP, but another guy curious about good boots. When you talk about quality, what exactly do you mean by that: construction, durability (eg. how long do they hold up), style, etc? I am honestly clueless when it comes to things like this and my shoe buying experience has been what's on sale at Macy's. And yes, I read the sticky, it touches on durability, construction and such; but doesn't say much about it.

I considered saying Rancourt but I hesitated because I thought the silhouette might be too far from what OP was asking for

I didn't say allen edmonds because I don't like the look of Daltons, but I probably should have mentioned them

also, there are a couple of reasons it couldn't be the AE Dalton. one is the brogueing isn't the same. the other is they're clearly different shapes and different leathers

>>8345659
I was talking about leather quality specifically. Googling it would probably return better information that anything I could give you, but a good full grain leather will feel nicer, crease less dramatically, and last longer than corrected-grain leather. Oh, and look better, too.

There are other ways that boots can be better-constructed which I won't touch on here. Google goodyear welts.

>>8345519
I'd love to hear what you have to say about Oak Street Bootmakers. I haven't had any of their plain toe stuff, which iirc is not made by the same people as the moccasin stuff (although both are contracted out to other manufacturers). Is that what you're talking about, or are you talking about the moccasins?

I could say a couple of nasty things about my moccasins from them but they're not all that bad. there's a problem where the insole tends to shift forward in the shoe over time, which is pretty bad imo, but other than that they seem to be okay. I probably wouldn't buy from them again though
