No you weren't. Average height through most of human history for settled peoples range from about 5'4" - 5'10", and nomadic tribes frequently reached 6' on average.

Because people are dumb and lazy.
You're right, Gareth Pugh didn't make anything nor did he sell anything from the runway during his first three years after graduations. He just kept showing at London Fashion week season after season with these wicked costumes that everyone loved but no one would buy.

No.
They don't risk the runway, something which makes or breaks that designers career (you are only as safe as your most recent collection) for experimentation.
Designers don't produce so fast fashion can dilute.
That's just a uncontrollable consequence.

>> No.8304517

>>8304492
'Experimentation' was a bad word for him to use, but his point about having influence is valid. It's sort of a weird thing to say though - accessible fashion and art can have influence too. It's not unique to more avant-garde (again, not a great word to use) / high art fashion.

Inaccessible, unpractical art exists in every other type of art as well. Why do people make dance music that is too weird for a mainstream audience? Why do architects make buildings that look so strange? Why do artists make paintings that don't make sense to you?

I don't even have a good answer for you, I can't really put it into words. But if you were more into fashion, you might appreciate it. You might find it important and powerful in spite of being something you'd never wear.

Then because the grind for a designer is so real you need to eat shit for years and put it all on the line, crossing every conscious body part and kissing every baby just to be given a shot.
He did that, the mysterious workings of Owens Corp decided he was worth it and he was nurtured by one of the greatest contemporary fashion houses.
I'm having a really hard time finding Geoffrey B Small's article on the subject of how difficult it is for young designers but it proficiently articulates why it was necessary for Gareth Pugh to do what he did then.

His recent collections are rad. Buys are more enthusiastic with every subsequent season.

>>8304491
Not that I am aware. Why would someone pay him to make costumes that no one would buy? Why would you think that?
iirc he won awards and scholarships often ranging within 20,000pounds but that's not exactly a lot to subsist on.

I'm not denying that designers experiment...
But given Gareh Pugh's background and where he was at that moment I don't think he had the luxury of 'experimentation'.
So no, it's a completely unreasonable conclusion.
I wasn't sure whether he was talking about the designer being influenced or the designer influencing fast fashion markets.
Of course people have reference points in there work...

Your whole narrative here is founded in a misunderstanding.
I can only tell you right now that you've wasted your time and I have no idea why you thought any of that necessary.
I never questioned 'why' he made it.

Thom Browne has insane, unwearable runway shows, but still makes ready to wear, accessible clothing to sell. Why wouldn't he just do both from the beginning?

I actually don't know much about Thom Browne at all.

However I do know that like CDG, there are Thom Browne collectors who buy those pieces you consider 'unwearable' simply because they are so beautiful, exotic and glamorous.

I guess to address why he didn't d both from the beginning...Well I don't know, everyone has their own unique discourse and that is something I can demonstrate.

Helmut Lang spent his earliest days in dress making as a MtM tailor in a small shop in Vienna. I don't know why, maybe to improve his craft on a technical level and familiarise himself with the current market. Perhaps it gave him a good indication of where the world was and where he should begin his journey as a designer.

Carol Christian Poell not dissimilar in that he spent his early career (can't remember where) but as effectively a traditional tailor making contemporary suiting. Then one day he started making things for aquatic humanoids and mutilated corpses.

So I guess what I'm saying here is everyone starts from their own unique environments and looks to do use the resources available to them at that time to produce what they think is valuable at that moment. Then maybe at some point they decide that they done enough of that/achieved what they wanted and have found a totally new environment for themselves to craft a whole different universe.

I can safely assume (knowing nothing of Thom's earlier career) that maybe he also started out just refining his worksmanship as a tailor, making well made garments for people that could afford it. Then one day he decided he had progressed enough to where he could design garments based on stardusted satyrs dancing around roman gardens to psychedelic tunes.

meanwhile, tallfag africans sustained their way of life for millennia living in perfect control of their resources, had excellent diets, and kept food on the table for literally every member of their tribe. The age expectancy and hygiene levels of tallfag africans were ten fold that of manlet greeks, by all means they were the model of a perfectly efficient society. their militaries were centuries ahead of the manlet's in gorilla tactics and it wasn't until the manlet's could figure out how to compensate with big guns to have any last military defeats on the tallfags. of course, this all changed when the manlets invaded, imposed their manlet ways on tallfags, and corrupted the genepool with their manlet impurities.

tallfags really are the master-race bitch.
