In this thread we will discuss denim, whether it be jackets or pants.

I am a complete beginner when it comes to the subject and often fantasize about having a personalized pair of jeans with the sickest fades. I'm more of a stacker than a cuffer, so how does one go about getting stacks like in pic related?

Further discussion:
What denim brands are you into and what pairs do you own?

What Is Raw Denim?

Raw denim is denim that has been unwashed, untreated and virtually untouched to the extent that it remains in its pure form.

Raw denim is typically produced with 100% cotton and feels heavier than normal denim. They weigh from 12 Oz, which is considered lighter than average for raw denim, all the way up to 16 Oz, which is considered the heaviest.

The fit for raw denim jeans come in every style from anti-fit (loose) to extremely tapered and skinny.

The key difference between raw denim jeans and normal denim jeans is the way you take care of the product. For raw denim the wearer typically “breaks in” the jeans through consistent wearing over 6-8 months and will not wash them for this period. With continued wear the originally rigid jeans will begin to soften as fades become solidified within the denim.

There are two main reasons to wear raw denim.

1. Raw denim can be likened to an individualized canvas. With consistent wear fades will form around three main areas, the crotch ( these fades are called “whiskers”), the upper calf to the back part of the knee ( these fades are called “honey combs”), and behind the ankle ( these fades are called “stacks”) together they are the pride of every raw denim wearer. Each fade can be likened to a story, or a chapter in a person’s life. Serious raw denim enthusiasts remember when and where each fade was created and why it was.
For instance, the left most whisker on my Nudie, Grim Tims was created when I attempted to jump over a fence to avoid a run in with a dog. By over extending my leg I put enough pressure on the raw denim to create this unique fade which will last a life time.

Because the life expectancy for each product is so long, some wearers even create wallet, cell phone, and key fades as well as minor tears. Though normal jean wearers consider the increasing of fades and tears to be taking away value from the product, this is exactly the opposite for raw denim enthusiasts. Each “imperfection” actually adds value; think of it as adding additional brush strokes to a canvas.

2. Raw denim jeans are environmentally friendly; due to low maintenance ( less wash loads) and less-labor needed ( jeans are left untreated after initial dyeing).

Nudie Jeans
Pros: Affordable: ($185-$285)

Softens up much faster than its peers, allowing wearers to be comfortable in them faster.

Wide variety of “cuts” that are able to cater to any body type.
-ex. Grim Tim- tapered legs but wide enough waist/crotch area to avoid blow outs
-ex. Slim Jim- slight taper on legs but extra room around thighs create the look of “not too skinny to be uncomfortable but still slimming and stylish.”

Cons: Not very durable
-ex. Unfortunately after 4 months of everyday wear the inseam began to give out.

Material is not as rigid as its peers. Though this allows for the denim to soften up faster it does not allow for the intense honeycombs, whiskers and stacks that typically come with heavier/more rigid jeans.

Imperial Denim
Pros: Extremely durable, these jeans will last up to three years even with everyday wear.

Typically heavier and more rigid; allowing for the creation of intense fading.

Prominent logo- Imperial denim has its signature three curving lines converging is stitched on the back pockets and is far more noticeable than some of its peers.

Cons: These jeans come with a price, typically $250 +

Though a few straight leg fits are offered, the majority are extremely tapered and usually fit tight from top to bottom.

Skull Jeans
Pros: Indigo used is darker than its peers. This allows for the contrast to be greater when fades are created, really highlighting the hard work you’ve been putting in.

Tighter weave allows skull jeans to act almost as a second layer of skin. Because of the unique weave fades are created much easier as every movement in the legs helps to construct a new crease.

Cons: Rumors that the product is not up to the standards of its peers in terms of quality. It has been noted that the prominent raw denim retailer, Self-Edge stopped carrying Skull jeans for a period of time because Skull emphasized style over quality. (Skull jeans are now carried by Self-Edge once again)

For the new wearers of raw denim there are a few things to keep in mind when investing in a pair.

1. Raw denim stretches out and you must size down accordingly. Though sizing down is different for each brand the general rule of thumb is to go down two sizes. For example, if you are a size 32 with regular jeans, then size down to a waist size of 30 for your raw denim pair.

A size 33 jeans would translate to a true waist size of 35.

2. Pre-soak your jeans. After purchase presoak them in hot water so that they will “shrink to fit.” I personally recommend wearers to soak them and them try them on while they are still wet and keep them on for at least 20 minutes so that the jeans will shrink to your particular body shape. This way as the jeans stretch out they will do so in a way that best complements your body shape.

3. Keep your jeans clean! Just because you are unable to put them in the washer for a few months does not mean you can simply let them be. Every three weeks or so hot soak them for 2 hours to keep them hygienic. (using hot water will also prevent the jeans from losing too much color)

You will lose a little bit of color with every soak and this is completely normal!

4. Wash your jeans when YOU think it is time. If you consistently wear your jeans everyday and for the majority of each day then 4 months could be enough to really solidify your fades with a wash; however, if you wear them only a few times a week then you might need to wait 8-10 months to do so.

5. Have fun with your jeans. Just because some consider them “art” or an expression of individuality does not mean you should freak out about every little ketchup or mustard stain on them. Just wear them knowing that every moment you’re in them your creating something more valuable than just a pair of jeans. Think of them as a college of memories in the form of various fades.

Those aren't stacks. Stop and fucking think for a sec, the back of your knees are gonna make creases in your pants whether you stack or cuff. Stacks are when it bunches up down by your ankles and sits on top of your shoes, and they aren't mutually exclusive with cuffing. You can have a cuff and have your jeans still stack. Most people think stacking looks better with slimmer fits, you can have your own opinion.

All I got right now is a pair of UB101s with a few months of wear on them, I've been doing everything in them though and have washed them 3 times already.

Raws can come in up to 28 oz. now, with heavier denim averaging about 21 oz. Most /fa/ approved skinny raw denim will generally be from 14 to 18 oz. though.
Also, wearing raws for at least a year before washing is the general consensus. Or just never washing them until they literally give out.

>>8286167
I've never had a fade that comes through this quickly.

>>8286174
Much more prevalent /fa/ denim:
N&F: good quality denim but the only cuts skinny enough to be /fa/ are stretch, and stretch denim is much harder to fade, and the fades won't look as good.
APC: denim is not as high quality, but like the Acne Ace Cash, you're paying for the cut not the denim. APC Petit New Standard is an excellent skinny cut that will give some good staxxx and fades relatively well.
Rogue Territory: pretty much the highest quality denim brand that makes a skinnier cut. It will not be as skinny as the N&F Super Skinny Guy or APC Petit New Standard, but looks better than the Japanese denim brands with like 8" leg openings and 40" inseams.
The heavier the denim, the harder it is to fade, but the better it will look.

>>8286181
This is all brand/vanity sizing dependent and sizing down 2 isn't always a good rule of thumb. Soaking is optional, but if you do it, do it for about 30 minutes and put them on until dry. You can freeze them or soak with a bit of Woolite Dark if they get smelly, but do NOT soak hot every 3 weeks. This will drain all of the denim.
Most jeans need at least 6 months constant wear to fade a lot, so if you only wear them twice a week it may take up to two years to get great fades.

Remember, regular denim is a purchase, raw denim is an investment.

N&Fs Weirdguy 32oz. jeans have been around for years.
> wearing raws for at least a year before washing is the general consensus
Six months is the typical wait, I don't think I've ever heard anybody recommend a year. At that point it's usually folks who do ocean soaks or simply never give'm a proper clean.
>You can freeze them
Doesn't work. Cold does not kill bacteria, it only retards colony expansion. One the jeans thaw they will start to smell again. A much better solution would be a denim odor sanitizer like retaW Mood, as it not only introduces a mild mint fragrance, but contains an antibacterial that should kill any colonies.

Adding to the brands:
3sixteen
Raleigh Denim
Flat Head
Iron Heart
Self Edge (collabs)
Kamikaze Attack
Pure Blue Japan
Railcar Fine Goods
Tate and Yoko
Momotaro

As a general rule, Japanese denim is more adventurous, American denim is more conservative. Reason being Japan has many high end denim mills that can afford to experiment, while the US is pretty much locked in with Cone Mills. Cone Mills is great denim, but you won't find scratch and sniff raspberry denim or jeans heavy enough to stand on their own.

You really, really can't trust promotional pictures from most sites, because the models almost never size down properly on the jeans and they'll take it at least a size too big so they can put it on quickly I guess.

The PNS is very tapered from the knee down, not so much in the thigh though. Any size around 27-28 is going to have a leg opening of 15.5 to 16cm which is very narrow.

Check APC's website for pictures of what the fit actually looks like, but even then you can't judge exclusively on this.

Stylistically I like them, they have a tame UC scab look going for them, but they for women so the cut will likely be a bit off for me

I just recently bought a jacket like that at All Saints (pic related) and as for jeans jet look for stone washed jeans.

>> No.8313923

Kind of unrelated, but how old is too old to be dressing like this? I wonder if it'd be weird if I kept wearing this stuff in my mid 20's.

it'll fade a bit. and probably shrink a bit, but will stretch out. just do you. I think they suggest that so excess black ink doesnt go everywhere (which it wont) up to you.
