Why does everyone recommend mechanical watches for people on a budget? I'm well-aware of the beauty of the mechanism and I love machines and engineering, but in a watch it's needlessly expensive, less reliable, and less accurate. The only practical advantage is that it could be repaired a century from now while a quartz movement might not, but no one's going to spend hundreds of dollars to fix your cheap Russian watch in 2105.

If you're just spending $200 on a watch might as well go quartz/solar/whatever. Back when I was wearing a $50 Casio dive watch I got lots of compliments and never had to set it more than twice a year.

Seiko 5s are great, there's like 200 different models. That particular one is played the fuck out because it's baby's first mechanical and the very cheapest one. If you spend an extra $30 you can get one much more versatile.

It's just too small to be a military style watch. I don't mind wearing a 37mm dress watch, but for a military watch, I want it to be at least 40mm.

I love my Seiko Spirit, running at COSC standards right out of the box. Only problem with it is, that I really want a Grand Seiko now.

Still can't decide, whether to go with the high accuracy quartz or the hi-beat. The hi-beat has the sweeping hands (obviously spring drive would be even better, but I'm scared of getting it serviced properly), but I don't particularly enjoy setting my watch every other week. So I'm somewhat leaning towards the HAQ movement.

Nixon is overpriced as fuck and not in a good way - at least for me.

See with Luxury watches, you at least get the best finishing possible and while overpaying, there is just nothing better.

With Nixon, you pay for the brand. You get decent movements, but the same are found in much much cheaper watches. You get good detail on their more expensive ones, but nothing fancy. What Nixon is, is a fashion brand really, which unlike real fashion watches at least have the feature of being rugged.

well that's because Seiko produces tons of watches that are above 1k USD such as Seiko Brightz or Seiko Astron. Additionally they have their Grand Seikos between 3k and 8k USD, which are already on the level of a Omega. Credor is even a step beyond that and it's essentially using modified Grand Seiko movements.

With Swatch you only have very basic watches and Omega has really nothing in common with that. If Omega used Grand Swatch movements, there would probably be Swatch on them somewhere as well, since there wouldn't be as much of an image problem, if there were higher end Swatches.

And the example for me still holds true because the Swatch Group makes most of their profits not from Omega, just like Seiko makes most of the money off cheap entry level watches as well. They both created a luxury brand to differentiate those products only Seiko's starts off in a much higher segment.

There's nothing fundamentally wrong with quartz. And I'm talking purely from "fashion" or emotional/heritage/prestige perspective. From functional and objective point of view they are in fact far superior to mechanical in every way imaginable so I'm not even bringing that up.

AFAIK Breitling quartzes are -+10 per year. How much less leeway they have in practice is way different thing. You might have SQ that runs +6 per year, and Citizen Chronoaster with A660 that runs -+5 (they are rated for that, as the most accurate quartz movement out there). Point being they are both great movements.

That makes sense when we talk about mechanical watches, which are fundamentally only an fashion accessory made in sake of heritage (what I mean is mechanical watches would be obsolete if they existed only for functionality). Not him, but if thats your qualification for the relevance of mechanical watches then surely trying to improve quartz time keeping for the sake of a few second here or there counts as an exercise in self-indulgence. The functionality argument is a difficult one to make since people do not need a HAQ any more than they need the heritage of a mechanical. It comes down to subjective preference.

I think we will have to agree to disagree on that, dude. I would feel ripped off, with a movement like that.

You have a good point with the function over decoration, but if you really just wanted pin point accurate time, why are you getting a HAQ movement for multiple thousands of dollars, when a $150 radio watch will be more accurate after 2 months of setting the HAQ.

You do it because the technology is awesome (that it can keep the time autonomously) and obviously for the perfect finishing, but then don't pretend it's not a fashion accessory as well.

But a Rolex IS cheap and unrefined compared to a Patek, that is objective fact. Just like how some woods are more expensive than others. If someone were to shit talk my rolex out of the context of a watch discussion then i would call that condescending. However if we're on the topic of watches (or floors) then the opinion is valid. Therefore you have no "condescension" to complain about.

If I had THE most expensive floor in the world, which was also the prettiest and most perfect in every way, that would not give me the moral right to talk shit about every other floor I see.

I have a fucking Patek 5970 in white gold, and I love to have a chat with a dude wearing a Heuer Monaco or a Speedmaster.

If I told him his watches were shit compared to my own, then that would be rude and inappropriate.

Also notice that tacky L4D picture.

It's sad really considering how much money he spent (I like the desk though, it looks stunning and is far superior to my not desk, (which is well crafted but looks too industrial) and the only thing next to the floor I envy him a little for.
