How exactly does the sneaker business work? They seem to instantly sell out this shit, which would suggest either they don't know how to meet demand or they want the things to be rare and desirable.
But, being rare and desirable only makes money for the people that come in and get them early, when they sell them on.

Building hype for a brand such as Nike is far more important than an extra few million in sneaker sales. The hype keeps Nike at the forefront of your mind.
Similarly, limited sneaker releases give the buyer a sense of urgency resulting in more impulse buys because "if I don't get it now, it will sell out and I will have to pay resale for them!"
If they had an unlimited number, you wouldn't feel as obliged to purchase them.

the same reason kanye's APC collaboration sold out in like three hours; the point is the hype. they want it to be a big deal if you own one of these things; to be able to say "i own these particular shoes/jeans/whatever" is a signifier of your dedication to a certain kind of fashion, but more importantly it adds hype to both the brand involved and to kanye. basically they love the fact that months and years after these things are released, fuccbois on an imageboard are still talking about how bad they wish they could get these shoes, because they know now that we're partial to nikes we're more likely to buy roshes than we are to go three stores down in the mall to the adidas shop, and they know the next time kanye collaborates with anyone, anyone on this board who has the money available is going to be staying up late to be one of the people who gets that shit in that three hour span
