Let's talk Japan! I really like certain Japanese designers and brands, but I feel like I've only scratched the surface of what's out there. Lots of the well-made Japanese brands never make it to a Western audience. Share some of your favorites and what you like/dislike.

Starting with a recognizable pic related: CDG

I like Mihara Yasuhiro's stuff. His mainline is great and I feel like his Puma collabs are underrated.

Bump for curiosity.

I'd especially like to know more about the early careers of people like Takahashi, Nishiyama, etc.

And I know Rei Kawakubo started with zero training, but how did she go from there to CDG to *CDG*?

>tfw have a few friends in Japan who look stylish as fuck and half of them don't even know anything about brands or designers
They just cruise around the city on weekends or whenever they have free time and buy shit that looks nice.

I know that during my stay there I saw a lotta cool stuff in the stores... Even western brands like Burberry and Katharine Hamnett had inventory that would never see the light of day outside of Japan.

>> No.8207556

>>8207494

The New Order magazine has some really good interviews with both of them and they talk about their youth and whatnot + there are many other good designer interviews

Rei studied aesthetics, worked as a stylist of a textiles company iirc, started designing her own clothing because she couldn't find anything she liked on the market. Debuted in Japan, debuted in Paris with Yohji in 1981, the rest is history

Of course.

Anyone have a download link for past issues of New Order?

Thanks.

I've read #6 and #9 which were fantastic, found them at my local stussy flagship so sat down for an hour and read through them

I don't think it's that big enough of a magazine to have any scans / downloads on the net

You should buy it, only around 20-25 bucks and is more of a magazine - book than a simple magazine. Little to no advertisements, all editorials and good content / interviews / reports on Japanese fashion / streetwear.

I'm liking the direction dbss has taken these past couple of collections, more in the sense that they've gone away from huge sneakers that westerners will froth over and into a more heavily stylised image. Most of it isn't stuff I could see myself incorporating into my wardrobe but it's got that Jun Takahashi flavour in those random elements that make up the whole. A lot to be appreciated.

Folks in NY should absolutely be checking our Noir Kei Ninomiya at DSM. Still in the CdG vein, but with an obsessive, highly-worked approach that's a nice contrast from mainline CdG. A dark sort of Baroque vibe in its detailing.
