What type of clothes should a folk musician wear if he doesn't want to come off too much like a hipster? I have hair down to my neck which I've never really done anything with. I have always owned running sneakers and have never really worried much about how I dressed.. But now that I'm playing out with a band I feel a bit goofy. How should a folk group dress?

>> No.8201682

lots of flannel shirts
twill pants and skinny jeans
desert boots and chuckas

What about a good haircut.. Or is a good haircut no haircut?

Listen to yourself for a second.
What you presumably find objectionable about hipster-clothing is the obvious 'appearance for appearance sake'-element that is constitutive of their whole facade -- i.e. their clothing being always-already addressed to the other(s) in an attempt to project a certain image that corresponds to their own idealized self-image according to the conventions of the particular 'sub'-culture in a desperate grasping for authenticity. Obviously this inauthenticity is entirely not about BEING anything, or HAVING anything, but merely about APPEARING which therefore bears witness to an ultimately vacuous endeavour to gain a sense of 'self' (constructed by and adhered to according to the whims of whatever pointless fashion fad that promises an escape from your inauthentic, narcissistic neurosis) and hence constitutes your 'acting out' a mental deadlock, a symptom of some underlying lack of consistency as a self-determined human being.

So imploring US to find something for you to APPEAR as is no more inauthentic than the hipsters you seem to abhor.

FUCKING FAGGOT, BUY A FEDORA AND CAPE

My gawd, what have I done? What's this with the fedora thing? I'm a hermit and have just been out playing with my friends.. I thought just older guys wore fedoras. Or occasionally that one guy.

Don't give a fuck about what you wear. Also Jeff is the most /fa/ folk musician but, dressing up like him is super played out.

Here's some ideas for you

A lightweight red hunting jacket, maybe plaid.
A light colored button-up shirt
some slacks, or dark jeans

Browse RRL, Gitman vintage, shop around unionmade.
Even if you cant afford it because lolmusician, that look would be what youre after.
As with all things, if it doesnt fit well and you dont have a keen knack for the type of dress, you'll just end up lookingg like a tryhard.

Most people here are talking absolute shit. Honestly you will likely look better wearing just what you are and what you always have, running shoes and all, while performing. Not giving a shit is inherently effay, especially if it's in a situation where everyone else does (ie if you're surrounded by hipsters) cause it's kinda subversive ya know. Plus it makes you seem more introspective/wrapped up in your music or whatever. And if you have to wear something else be overtly interesting to the point of slight weirdness.

Who's cooler, Daniel Johnston or Mumford and Sons? John Fahey or Jake Bugg? Exactly.

>> No.8201839

dressing like a folk musician just because you enjoy folk is just as bad as buying a shitty band tee because you like the band.

>> No.8201854

>>8201840
Not that guy. But he is saying the exact opposite.
He's saying that consciously choosing to wear whatever constitutes 'not-giving-a-shit'-style-clothing, is equivalent to wanting to appear in a certain way to his peers, which it is.

If you even think about what other people think about your clothing, you're always-already caught up in the 'VALIDATE ME'-ethos.

>> No.8201856

>>8201629
all of the shit you're getting in this thread aside i think that you're generally going to want to go for thrift store sweaters and flannels and shit like that, a basic, inexpensive 'vintage' kind of thing. for shoes you'll probably want to go for brogues or moccasins or something and for pants just do something lowkey, a good pair of blue jeans is probably the only 'expensive' thing that would look acceptable for this

generally speaking look relaxed and like you don't really care about fashion but you appreciate a certain folksy vintage aesthetic

if that seems too hipsterish for your tastes or the band's aesthetic, go for modern workwear without being too high fashion about it. carhartt, denim shirts, maybe some brown docs or something

>> No.8201865

>>8201856

I'd say the first paragraph of that is exactly what not to do cause it's so cliche and try hard. Like what someone would wear to a Bombay Bicycle Club show.

>> No.8201870
