He does have a specific style, but I think it's more a function of the reputation he has than of any particular rapport that he has or any skill he has in coaxing out specific vibes or moods from his models. Compare the variety of looks he's able to tease out of his models to any of the greats—Snowdon, Avedon, Newton—and I think it's pretty clear that he's a much weaker talent.

I agree that his composition etc. is nothing special, but what makes his pictures special is the visible chemistry between him and his subjects. Look at Tyler Shields who does similar pictures. They feel completely empty compared to Uncle Terry's work.

All good points, but I also think that people know that Terry Richardson photos are going to be everywhere and there's a certain desire to perform that a less well-known photographer won't get out of his subject. I still think that it's Richardson's fame, and not his talent, that gets his subjects to do what they do.

I think a perfect example of this is the campaigns he does for Marc Jacobs and Celine. They're way more interesting than anything Richardson every shoots on his own because Jacbos and Philo obviously retain top notch stylists for these purposes and the clothes and subjects are way more interesting on their own, too.

Sorry, I meant in comparison the campaigns Teller does. Very similar compositional style, but you wouldn't really notice the difference unless you were REALLY well versed in Teller's work or was told that it wasn't Richardson.

People mistake his work for being "only" shot in his studio. He's done a lot of editorial work too. I don't think he's as good as Stevens Meisel or Klein, or Inez and Vinoodh, but he's got some good, widely available stuff. He's no Helmut Newton but there is something there

Another instance where it's more the brand/designer than Richardson, really. Anybody who remembers Tom Ford at Gucci can clearly see the through line from the Roitfeld/Testino days to the explicit fragrance/accessory/beauty campaigns of his modern era. Terry actually did shoot for Ford during his tenure, but compare it to everyone else who Ford tapped to lens his campaigns and I'd say it's clear that his work is amongst the weakest.
