I think it's pretty stupid to wear military patches as a civilian. Men have died with those on their shoulders; You're just going to look like a faggot with a unit patch or a ranger tab because those patches come at prices not listed at a military surplus store. As for flags, knock yourself out, but make sure to follow your countries flag code or equivalent if you actually care about the flag you're wearing.

You could, but in America we have a lot of assholes who dress up in military attire and try to get VA benefits, so while you're free to wear the stuff the people who you think you're honoring will probably think you're an asshole.

Being able to wear that patch means you earned it. That's why they have different berets, and different tabs. Is someone doing it because they want to wear a super cool patch? Of course not but having earned that patch gives you pride about it and seeing someone wearing a patch as a civie would piss me off.
