Hey /fa/ I was just browsing the old watch thread when it 404'd halfway through.

I finally have a decent job and would like to purchase a nice watch. I have pretty particular tastes though. Something like the picture I posted would be perfect although I would prefer a flat black leather strap.
Feel free to share your watches! I love this stuff.

low-end watches are expensive because branding.
middling watches are expensive because it's a handmade piece of machinery designed and crafted by highly trained specialists
high-end watches are expensive for the above and also because luxury branding.
obscene-en watches are obscenely expensive because the target demographic simply won't spend anything less, but they do at least try to justify it with exotic materials or building musical instruments into the watch.

Are you ready? Because I want you to pay attention. This is the beginning of something. Do you have time to improve your life? Do you have precisely 30 seconds for a word from Accutron watches? The watch appears, bottom third; the second hand moves with a fluid sweep, and above it - Accutron time. You go into a business meeting; is there food in your teeth? Ashes on your time? And you've got nothing to say, and the meeting is boring; but you can't be. But you're wearing an Accutron. This watch makes you interesting.

It's a board room, it's black and white. We hear light traffic, no talking; we just see our man, you, late twenties, shaggy, with a youthful cowlick, but in a suit and tie; this is a businessman, staring at his watch as muffled conversation swirls around him. Now we just hear the electronic hum - OHHHHMMMMMM. He stands up and the faces come into view: a couple of white-haired men and a contemporary who looks like Steve McQueen. You shake hands and Steve McQueen gets a look at your watch. We hear the first words: "is that Swiss?"

It is Swiss. It is accurate. It is the height of design and technology.

Accutron. It's not a time piece. It's a conversation piece.

i guess nothing other than quite a few of their models are very similar to Rolexes at least from a distance, it's basically the same practice what Chinese car manufacturers are doing recently w/ already successful European (premium) brands such as Audi, BMW & Mercedes, which doesn't mean that these Chinese cars or Seikos would be bad
but that's a common practice in Asia, it was in the Meijji era in Japan and it was/is in car manufacturing too, they "borrow" technology/ideas/design, adapt it and oftentimes they end up doing it even better than the source itself where it was borrowed from and in result for instance Japanese cars (Toyota) are the most reliable cars in the world

but let's ask the question w/ other words leaving the brands out this time: why would anybody want something expensive to look cheap? why not just buy the cheap at the first place?

A watch should be something that lasts at least 10 years.

Also, let me know how your Parnis holds up in water, i'd love to know. Any half decent watch should be completely waterproof and that seems to be a problem with many budget shit watches like Parnis.

And don't even get me started on that stupid name; "Parnis". Parnis sounds like a French luxury brand name when in reality it's just a bunch of shitty knock offs that use horrible Chinese movements and are branded with that stupid luxury sounding name.

Seems a bit too casual for me. I do like chrome on my watches but not all blinged up with gold.

Yes and no. The watches I saw that I sort of liked was the Citizen Eco Drive and the Bulova Precisionist. I'm not sure if there's anything else similar to those.

eco-drive and precisionist are watch movements, not watch models.

Citizen, Seiko, higher end Casio, and god forbid Fossil. All that shit. Literally look at Kohls and JCPenny if you want something middle class.

I thought eco drive was just the fancy marketing term for citizen's solar watch technology

yes.
the important part being it's not one particular watch, but a whole line.

>god forbid Fossil

I take it Fossil isn't a good company then? I had Casio for years and while I can appreciate their quality they just didn't feel good to have. Looking for something like Pic Related sort of.

>Seiko

How is their collection? I know what I'm looking for but I haven't found it yet.

>eco-drive and precisionist are watch movements,

I like those watch movements and some of the watches in those I like. I really should stop asking questions at 4 in the morning.

so you want, like, a chunky, cluttered dial?
there's no shortage of those i suppose.

Bulova was bought by citizen and all, but their reliability/quality still lags behind it's parent companies and rivals Seiko and higher end Casio watches.

Fossil, like Invicta, just mass produces watches knocking off more expensive ones, with poor quality. Casio, because of their such low end can have a bad image, sure.

Honestly then look at some of the higher end steel Casios and not plastic Gshocks. Seiko has their own solar models. Searching carbon fiber with the brands gets results similar to your picture. Swatch Irony also may interest you.
