the design is dependant on the manufacturing process.
they aren't willing to spend the money on good leather or even good pieces of cheap leather.
they use small scraps of cheap leather and stitch them together, hence the ugly design.

My friend once asked me to help him chose some spring/summer shoes. I told him to get some comfy sport shoes, sneakers or something. This. I dunno about cheap, nice looking shoes (although it's hard to go much worse than OP pic), but there are ppl who believe this kind of shoes are "classy but casual" (you know the le friendzoned fedora guys) because they are made of dark-leather, so not flashy like pic rel and they don't look like oxford/brogues/chelsea shoes (read too formal).

They don't like to buy "fancy" shoes I mentioned before, because they don't want to look gay (I shit you not), or they lack confidence, and they think they look better than niggers/chavs/whateversinyourcountry, because they don't wear jordan/airmax/whatevertheywearinyourcountry.
