8008296 No.8008296[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

Searching for a watch in the 5k-10k dollar price range. I find Rolex and other popular mid tier watch brands (Breitling, Omega, Tudor, whatever) overplayed. I don't like Grand Seiko.

What I'd like is a relatively versatile watch; idc about the bracelet's material, I'm talking about water resistance here, something that doesn't break if I take a shower or swim with it.
I also want it to have a 'wow' factor, I know I won't get anything as renowned as Lange or Patek for 10k since I'm not willing to buy used, but Rolex is common as fuck here and something a bit more interesting would be nice. Not too complicated, I don't care about chronographs or whatever, and bloated watch faces are horrid.

Any recommendations in terms of specific models? Pic is what I don't want

so let me get this straight

-rugged
-versatile
-not diver (like pic)
-sth other than bretiling, rolex etc.
-not complicated (eg no chronograph)
-wow factor

I just don't want an overly dressy watch like a Calatrava (can't afford it anyway lol) or a Reverso.
>versatile
Yes
>not diver
Not a huge bezel with useless gas escape valves or whatever, yes.
>sth other than bretiling, rolex
Yes.
>not complicated
Yep. I'd like to avoid a date function too if possible, if not whatever
>wow factor
Yep. Most of the people I work with own stuff along the lines of Rolex, Cartier, Omega, nothing really interesting, I'd like to stand out a bit.

Most watches that are worth more than 5k are manufactured, designed, assembled in first world countries, people doing them are highly qualified and hence have a good salary. It takes a shit load of time to assemble a watch, tune it, etc and are generally made with precious metals.
The fact that those brands have also a huge marketing department had some price to it.
However some brands like Patek raise their price for premium branding.

>> No.8008416

>>8008394
that makes sense
still seems to me it should be a funny feeling walking around with a watch you paid $5k+ for that, for all intents and purposes, looks and runs the same as one that cost a lot less because it was assembled in a 3rd world country.

i guess i'm just so used to buying $2 t-shirts and $5 sweaters that i sometimes forget things aren't supposed to be this ridiculously inexpensive and that a $5000 watch is actually a pretty reasonable price.

One of the full-german made companies perhaps:

Damasko's latest offerings with their technomagical in-house movement?
Transcend's "rugged". It's the only brand with black-metal watches that cannot have the "black coating" scratched off - Sinn certainly can be.
A wonderful piece of engineering. Although, could be considered boring in appearance.

Nomos are more dressy. They do have some pricier models in your range I think. Total German made/ in-house designed movements.
Could be considered too sombre, though I don't think of that of the Bauhaus aesthetic.

Glashuette Original:
If A.Lange & Soehne is the German contender for top prize (like Patek is to Swiss made), the GO are like Rolex tier, and just as flashy. Swatch group, so I don't know about their internals.

All the german brands, with perhaps the exceptions of the last 2 I mentioned, are perhaps an acquired taste.

They are very stolid. Very Teutonic. If I had 5000 or whatever it is lying around I'd be interested in the Damasko's with the "never, ever service in your lifetime or the next" movement (denoted the the red "Si" on their dials).

Wonderful pieces of over engineering from what's in reality a side business of a metallurgical/industrial/aerospace firm.
