surprised you don't know that much abt raf tho, cause for better or for worse, he's probably one of the most important or at least most influential designers of the last two decades

there's not that much to know/get about taps tho, it's a lot of high-end repro of miltaria from tet's personal archive kind of reproduced/reconstructed with japanese aesthetic philosophies in mind, namely wabi-sabi or "miya-daiku"
i think his stuff is interesting, it's certainly well-made, and apart from Shinsuke Takizawa, he might be the only one from the original ura-hara scene who's stayed relatively true to his roots and been consistent in terms of output without stagnating

i dont know how important raf is when compared to the japanese old gods, hl, mmm, hc, at, gbs and sr which i don't think i'm nearly familiar enough w/

he also doesn't represent a movement (philosophical or creative) that i'm interested in...or at least from what i've seen/know.
i also know next to nothing about these sort of ~new wave~ japanese designers but again i think it's just because of a particular dissonance in interest

tbh i think most figures you mentioned (the trio of issey, yohji, & rei, margiela) all set up the conventions that would define their work in the 80s and early 90s, same with beirendonck (who I would definitely rank as extremely important and influential as well). even gbs started his recycling collections as early as 92 or 93 iirc. who's "AT" though? can't say i'm familiar with him
admittedly lang definitely came into his own at the same time period of the mid to late 90s, though my knowledge about his work is p. inchoate

I would say raf is pretty important mostly for introducing what would become the new silhouette of menswear in the late 90s that carried on into the 00s (albeit perhaps popularized more by slimane, that's what the whole cathy horyn debacle was about) and for sparking a resurgence of interest in austere, minimalist fashion with his appointment at jil sander - his stuff can still be seen today in the newer applied arts designers that are rising to prominence like peir wu and especially ute ploier

idk i don't think raf even presents a particular philosophy but i think the reason it resonates so much with ct is because how it kind of captured this nascent youth culture of the time that ct and a lot of other people relate to
also a lot of musical references that ct liked

http://stylezeitgeist.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3757&page=2

it's just easy for me to start from issey because i already love sruli, and issey is like sruli to me (in a technical sense) but with a lot more colour.
this also kind of speaks on my interests in altieri and his work

but if i start from issey then i can go forward and back easy. back to vionnet, poriet, paquin or forward to yohji, rei, mmm, hl and never feel bored, lost or lacking.
i always forget about westwood, need to spend more time on westwood.

i always felt raf was just a bad continues of hl and mmm. i think hl and mm broke, then reformed the binary for dressing more than anyone in the 80s and 90s

i've got a few things open on ploier atm but really im still mulling over yy, rei and issey and finding them in pre-ww2 japan.
(all while sporadically reading about western do's)

i never thought raf was conceptual enough to not be philosophical, everything he did early seemed to have a political idea (i don't know the year but whenever he stopped doing suits and started doing straps and towels) and then everything later seemed to be extrapolating on rites of passage, adolescents entering 'adult hood' and what that meant to them in contrast to the past considering the radically different society theyve grown in.

there are old as posts were me and ct would talk about shit like this, dd and ann d.

or maybe i just don't like raf because whenever i think raf, i think tom ford and i don't like tom ford

idk abt the lang comparison, i don't find that lang had that much influence aesthetically or thematically
mmm at least a bit tho, mmm's 89 show was the first raf saw and what inspired him to take up fashion design apparently
i'm not saying that raf isn't philosophical whatsoever, just that he doesn't "present a particular philosophy" throughout his oeuvre - yeah, for the most part it was based around politicized themes: environmentalism, consumerism, social alienation, etc
i think the idea of politicized collections was definitely influenced by his time under beirendonck, but that's another matter
i think you're right about adolescents tho, which goes back to my kind of otherr point
>t kind of captured this nascent youth culture of the time
i.e the new generation with a nascent sense of self that often defined themselves in quite an unsubtle way, the modified army jackets, the numerous musical references, all motifs that were present in a lot of raf's early work
the reason i'm hesitant to call him philosophical, at least in this day and age, is cause he seems
to have abandoned that
i forget the exact quote but i was reading s/t in a taschen book, think it was called "Fashion Now", had an interview with a bunch of designers incl. raf, and he said something like "i'm done making clothes with teenagers, i want to reach out to a larger audience and make clothes for everybody"
which is kind of what he did at jil
but i don't really find it that present in the latter half of the 2000s, it was definitely the influence from jil seeping into his personal collections, even though it was pretty defined around SS05
>>7984201

a lot of the more 'tailored' mens suiting sort of garments always had heaps of lang in them, even the 90s raf collections seemed to hold a lot of those tall, elegant but still relaxed silhouettes that hl more or less coined
(pic related, not cherry picking - heaps of shit like this if you just google 90s raf).

i definitely thought raf did, even being unfamiliar with his works there was (for me atleast) always kind of a narrative, taken from the dad, 90s --> teenage son, early 2000s --> the son facing, adult hood, choice and isolation (unlike the one his ancestry had faced) around the 2010s
and this narrative provided a philosophy in ways of social development, commitment, obligation then vs now.
(images incoming)

i don't know how much of it exists now, maybe im just romantising but idk.
ughhh i keep running into the book i need to read it!
i don't think his quote is so much an abandonment in concept rather than a evolution (which coincides with the narrative im about to display!)
i think raf is raf and has been raf for a long time in concept even if it requires a bit of imagination

i'm all about knowledge and learning but how much of this shit really matters or is useful in any way other than discussing it with the veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery few people who might understand it in the same way you do / be able to come to understand it in this way?

these posts seem more like "i'm trying to include every little thing i can think of about this designer's work to prove how much i know" rather than actually sustaining an exchange, a dialogue. it's like 2 people looking at a painting, and both of them blurting out every single thing they know about the painter and the influences and branching off into every single related detail because they don't want the other person to think that they are not capable of appreciating the piece of art in the way that it "should" - when all it really takes is a basic understanding of the painter's work to appreciate it.

i remember turnleft discussing in another thread recently about yohji not being anti fashion or something, but not being of any stream, that he had not made conscious movements to go against the establishment - which he did sort of prove in some cases with examples. but when 99% people think yohji, they think anti fashion, rebellion, a subtle difference. and he has said this himself many times before.

while he might have been right as well, who the fuck looks into shit THAT far? like what does that even teach you, what use does it have to look into and overanalyze something waaaaaaaaaaay beyond what 99% of people who also appreciate the work do? i bet if you talked to people who have worked closely with yohji like tadashi kubo, irene silvagni etc and told them that he is not "anti fashion" they would be completely confused

tldr: stop overanalyzing and overthinking. knowledge is good, but there is such a thing as useless knowledge that only confuses.

personally, these things are fun for me so i research them and discover more.
i don't really swing a lot of it around because not a lot of people care, so i relish the opportunity when someone shows interest.

we're not really detailing anything outside of raf's work, even then it's just scatching the surface. it's more like 2 people looking at a painting and saying why one sees flowers and the other sees airplanes or whatever. i think you're just having a knee jerk reaction to something you don't know a lot about. to me junior is coming across clear because i know what he's talking about (or i think i do), for someone who doesn't - it might just look like noise.
again, if you think this is detail...i don't really know what to tell you. i also think you'll find people that have spent their entire life producing something often express complex things in their work for a very specific reason, although it might not resonate with you it's fun to pick and try understand where they're coming from (fun for me at least).

...
ummm... you misunderstood...
well i guess this is where the fun is, i couldn't care less what anyone around yohji says, you or even yohji says about his work. i have done my own reading, my own searching and come to my own conclusions. your rudimentary quotes are far from the 'end all of fashion'

i think you'll also find that yohji has said he likes to break rules with every collection always something to break - to rebel.
so although you took it as 'rebelling against the fashion industry' or w/e
i don't think i ever said he was because if he works within all the same mediums of commercial fashion how can his rebellion ever account to anything (see GBS and altieri in contrast).
his rebellion for me was a social one, rebelling against social norms, the fashion of the time but not in a obnoxious way but in a way to setup alternative from the mundane. not against the fashion culture and industry at all - infact, i think he was really fond of it. if you read almost anything involving him you can see how passionate he is about his work, the industry and everything that encapsulates it. uses all the same mediums of fashion industry --> can't rebel fashion industry --> against fashion of the time through (social fashion).

it's called a hobby.

here's the thread so you can correct yourself
>>/fa/thread/S7868855#p7875211
i very specifically started with defining anti fashion - against fashion industry.

Selling this DRKSHDW Prisoner jacket in size 48. It fits a little smaller than that, more like a big 46. Signature slim arms.

Material is cotton for the body, and the arms feel like som kind of nylon/ripstop fabric.

400$ + ship

what's their middleman fee?

>> No.7995290

>>7995261

very reasonable actually -- the bulk of the cost comes from EMS shipping costs and having to wait so damn long for the package to get to their facility and be processed. Most of it comes in little usage fees along the way.

>>7995251

it's ridiculously good but I have almost no chance of winning with the funds I have now.

Yessir, I figure if I can't wear it then someone on sufu or ebay can. I did some digging and the leather version (it's fw07) sold for about 2k, so the wool version should hold some decent value.

>> No.7995318

>>7995297
They have a leather one? Well one of my UC grail is the 07 AW UC long coat that Bai had. Yeah I think I'm more of a size 1-2 so that coat won't probably fit me. But wasn't parka we talking about is not 07, or are we actually talking about different coats lol. either way, would it be easy to flip it?

>> No.7995324

Whoever said parka before is incorrect, it's more of a two-part wool moto jacket. I think there will be a pretty damn good amount of interest in this one
