Cartier have only just started making their own movements and are still more of a luxury jewellers than fine watch makers.

Omegas are more low on the fame that the above two but still make fine watches in the seamaster and speedmaster ranges.

That is a one-off. I am talking about production watches.

Just look at the dials. UJS hand carve the line into them, as well as painting the numerals on by hand.

With Patek, Lange, VC, they all just stamp out the dial and then spray paint it.

Just take a look at the enamel dials on the R11C. It's a work of art. AND it's a production watch, not a one-off.

I hang on watch forums and I never got this. If the quartz and automatic versions look the same, people looking at you in public can't tell the difference, and the quartz watch will actually be a better watch.

No, it is a Seiko movement. They lied and said it was designed 100% in house and were caught out. Deny it all you want but it's you who should do their homework.

>> No.7987819

>>7987772
“The origin of the patent was not in the original press release we sent out on the 1887, so the first thing we did on Monday was to mention that the intellectual property was from Seiko Instruments (SII), which is the engineering company under the Seiko umbrella,” Babin says. “Their prime client in watches is Seiko and in 1997, they developed a patent for a new chronograph. When we decided to launch our own chronograph programme, we looked at all the chronographs on the market and the one from SII was the one that fit our needs the best, especially because it featured an oscillating pinion, an invention by Edouard Heuer in 1887. It was also a perfect match for our existing range of chronographs, between the Dubois Dépraz movement, which was a chronograph module, and the Zenith 36 movement, which is an integrated chronograph.”
It made sense for TAG Heuer to find an existing, reliable and well-designed chronograph to adapt, as it saved the company years of development time and costs. In acquiring the intellectual properties of the patent from SII, TAG Heuer made sure it could make changes to the patent, improvements that deviate from the patent and make the movement its own."
The article goes on to say how the added much more to the movement, making it a 100% designed in house watch.

>> No.7987845

>>7987819
I honestly can't believe anyone can be seriously defending them
>release watch, call movement 100% in house designed and made
>get caught lying, panic and make excuses

And you buy that? Even at the price point of their watches? At least they're getting decent leftovers I guess.

>> No.7987864

>>7987845
I agree it was a PR nightmare. It should have been handled differently, they should have came straight out and said "yes the 1887 is based of a Seiko movement. We were looking for a quality mass produced chronograph. We bought the intellectual rights from SII and we made it better. We only used the Seiko movement as a starting off point and we made it our own".
Dunno, that is my opinion. I will never buy a new Tag. Most likely I will shell out money for an original Heuer, but I understand where they are coming from.

You're best off doing a search like this on google
>sub-[$price range] automatic site:watchuseek.com
and looking around there for a while. or remove the automatic part if you don't want one for some weird reason, and adding your own criteria like "chronograph" or something. or just go on amazon and look around, post what you find here and we'll most likely be like "no". you're better off taking your time picking one.

IWC buy ebauche ETA top grades. Decorate them, tweak a little something here and there and voila, you are now paying 4k more than the guy next to you without the IWC stamped watch but who has the near exact same movement. Same design, same oscilations.

Omega do pretty much the same with a lot of their models except replace 'ETA' with 'Lemania'

AFAIK they even sued another Watch company from Glashütte (Mühle Nautische Instrumente) about them using too much ETA parts in their watches to still be able to call their watch Glashütte.

so Mühle had to add more modifications to their ETA movements, whereas Nomos, at this point, was in-house enough already.

However how much of their movements isnt even based on ETA, I dont know.

Thinking of copping this. It's the Mondaine Classic Watch in brushed steel - A660.30314.16SBB.

m8 friend, watches are more about brands and the history behind them than looks. If you're after the looks, you'll have more fitted answers in another thread. With that said, you're probably after a minimalist military watch. A mechanical Seiko 5 SNK809 will be $50 or 60€ and has a crystal back so you can look at the movement, do you like it? It's baby's first mechanical in the watch audience, but I have one and no one knows it irl.

>> No.7993598

>>7993488
Yeah, I don't care much for brand or history. I was just looking for something casual to wear when not operating. I've heard good things about Seiko and for that price it's not a bad pick up, but it looks a little thick for me and with so much going on in the face.

The company that makes the one I linked before seems to make simplistic ones that (at least to me) look pretty nice.

http://voidwatches.com/store/watches
in the V03B and V03D categories

I've never heard of them so maybe they don't have the same history and brand appreciation that some of the big watch makers in the thread have. I like the look of watches so perhaps when I get more money I can invest in one of those high quality ones.

>> No.7993690

>>7993598
It's the first time I hear about them but with quartz there's not much room for bad surprises. It's just a bit overpriced. Look around for a bit before, $185 can get you plenty of good things, and could very well provide for a similar quartz watch plus a handful of straps for diversity. And coming from /k/ you'll love NATO bands, and they're popular so it's safe.
