Is there a better boot in the $100-200 range than the Wolverine 1000 mile?

William Lennon
actually only cost 165GBP, but still take very long to make and have to be shipped to US each boot separately for like $50
really cool ancient manufacturing techniques and equipment - look it up

read about it on a forum somewhere
something to do with the package size being waaaay cheaper if you ship separately

don't even fucking bother with "lightly used"
the boots themselves aren't that good, and whatever sweat and shit the previous owner excreted into them is now stuck, festering in the cheapo insole they use

if by lightly used you mean "bought it, tried it on and wrong size! oops! off you go to ebay!" then that's fine, but if it's "i wore it for a few weeks or months and now need more money for my crack habit" then don't bother

this boot, as nice as it looks in profile,
has the ugliest square toe ever
look at some other pics
fuck
i know why it's squared off (for walking up trench stairs and shit) but it's fugly by today's standards

trust me, look at other pics of that boot and you'll reconsider

ll bean kahtadin engineer boot is great. I own a pair for almost 9 months and they held me great through the harsh winter of Chicago this year. highly recommended, not overly expensive, solid as fuck boot. it's more of a matte finish not shiny/glossy so it's easier to wear with more casual clothes but can also be worn with slacks and a sweater, nut for business meetings/formal events though

Don't listen to this guy, he's exaggerating.

The boots are fantastic if you can get them under $300. The insole isn't great, but it's not crap either. You can replace that with time anyway.

>You can replace that with time anyway.
Yeah, but who's going to do that for you?

Wolverine doesn't offer a factory resole service, let alone a recrafting service.

Basically, you buy them and your on your own with them till they finally wear out.

Sure, you can go to a cobbler somewhere and if they're not some stupid monkey they can replace the outsoles for you.

If they really know their shit they could even re-welt them, but they would never be the same because they don't have the original lasts that wolverine keeps nice and locked up in their factory. The boots wouldn't be as comfortable.
Same problem with the insole.

Factory job only; anyone else doing it would cost more than the boots are worth.

Not saying you're going to need it tomorrow after having bought the boots today, but the 1k mile is a poor boot in regards to construction and longevity compared to others.

Still, not like you're going to live very long/wear those same boots in a decade so who gives a fuck, right?

insole and sole are two different things.

>> No.7974747

>>7974638
and?
we were discussing insoles
not outsole
the latter can be easily replaced by a competent cobbler
the former is much more difficult and not even worth it really

some companies don't even offer the option or replacing the insole, even during a full recraft, and others will only provide it only if specifically asked.

that's why i'm against buying used shoes with any significant wear because once the insole is molded to someone else's foot that's it unless you can get it replaced at cost (might as well buy a new shoe)

still, the 1k mile has a fiberboard insole anyway so it's not going to be very good at conforming to specific feet and why i will always recommend red wing and others over wolverine

they cheaped out on a nice boot for no reason other than to save themselves a few bucks, but by doing so have significantly reduced the quality in my eyes

others may not be so discerning, but when the choice is between a real leather insole and what amounts to fancy cardboard hidden by a thin strip of leather, well, I know which one I'm going to choose

if the boots op is considering has a worn in insole then I would strongly advise him to reconsider, as he would literally be walking in someone else's shoes (fitted for someone else's feet)
