The only reason that I haven't been outed as a plebe is because I can pass with my entry-level as hell knowledge of Sondre Lerche, St. Vincent, and The Strokes, but they're on that "local band shows multiple times a week" shit.

As you can see, that's MY perception of a hipster. To other people, me listening to Garbage, Franz Ferdinand, and Metric on a regular basis is "hipster" because it's outside their idea of the "norm". It's all relative.

At the end of the day, you are someone's "hipster", and you'll have to either live with that or sacrifice your entire identity to please the herd.

The twist, of course, is that if it weren’t for your own insecurities, nothing that a “hipster” could do or wear would ever affect you emotionally. But you are insecure about your own authenticity - “Do I wear what I wear because I want to? Do I listen to my music because I truly like it? I’m certainly not like those filthy hipsters!” - so you project those feelings.

Suffice it to say, no one self-identifies as a hipster; the term is always applied to an Other, to separate the authentic Us from the inauthentic, “ironic” Them.
