was cobain /fa/ ? like do you think he had a stylist after the band got way more famous/mainstream, or was his style just co-opted by the fashion industry at the time? i mean he gave the impression that he just wore whatever was on hand from the local thrift store and comfortable, but there are several fits of his that seem pretty well put together. and of course, his hair got wayy better if you compare it from the bleach era to post-nevermind success. or was this just a general cultural shift in american fashion trends in the early 90s?

to broaden the topic of discussion, who are some other rockstars that came across as fashionable and not just try-hards?

he was an attractive guy that women fawned over, he was marketed as the moody bad boy.

being moody was the "in" thing in the 90's
a lot of characters on Disney and nickleodean were "moody depressed edgy teens"

he had a stylist
his clothes were marketed, his music was marketed

he was on mtv nearly everyday back when MTV was big

he wasn't a rock star he was a pop star

his music isn't fun to play nor was it great
but people ask to hear nirvana songs because they think it takes skill

it's just 3 power chords over and over in the same strumming pattern

only thing that prevents noobs from doing it is the strain on your index/middle finger from the power chords so most just opt for a capo

obvious troll and tons of misinformation, just reveals how ignorant you are

while some of his guitar parts weren't that complicated, you also have to factor in the fact that he was a fantastic singer and knew how to put together a song/melody/lyrics. you're not giving him enough credit, as even the most famous songs typically had a bridge and chorus that differed from the verse sections.

Sieg has said the exact same thing before, and after a long "debate" only proved that he knows even less than we initially thought. Don't argue with him.

Even though most pop stars are manufactured, and artificial, sieg can't seem comprehend three important facts:
1) Kurt Cobain was not a pop star, and grunge started as a very authentic genre
2) There are exceptions, and Nirvanas success is based around that
3) If Cobain had his way, Nevermind would have sounded like raw garage-record demos, as evident by the original version turned into the label. He hated how polished the album ended up sounding like.

Jaguars were devised as the most up-scale Fender models at the time of their releasee (1962). Cobain's was a '65 model, which today would cost 2-3k depending on condition. He was into offset guitars because he liked bands like Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr.

I can't remember exactly where I read it, but he bought his Jaguar for $400 sometime in '91. Which when adjusted for inflation, would be about $700. Hardly $25

[[ From the Archive: The Definitive Kurt Cobain Gear Guide ]]

What is it about them that works for you?

They’re cheap and totally inefficient, and they sound like crap and are very small. They also don’t stay in tune, and when you want to raise the string action on the fretboard, you have to loosen all the strings and completely remove the bridge. You have to turn these little screws with your fingers and hope that you’ve estimated it right. If you screw up, you have to repeat the process over and over until you get it right. Whoever invented that guitar was a dork.

It was Leo Fender.

I guess I’m calling Leo Fender, the dead guy, a dork. Now I’ll never get an endorsement. [laughs] We’ve been offered a Gibson endorsement, but I can’t find a Gibson I like.

Is the Mustang your only guitar?

No, I own a ’66 Jaguar. That’s the guitar I polish and baby — I refuse to let anyone touch it when I jump into the crowd. [laughs] Lately, I’ve been using a Strat live, because I don’t want to ruin my Mustang yet. I like to use Japanese Strats because they’re a bit cheaper, and the frets are smaller than the American version’s.

The acoustic guitar you play on “Polly” sounds flat.

That’s a 20-dollar junk shop Stella — I didn’t bother changing the strings. [laughs] It barely stays in tune. In fact I have to use duct tape to hold the tuning keys in place.

Considering how violently you play the guitar, I have to assume that you use pretty heavy-duty strings.

Yeah. And I keep blowing up amplifiers, so I use whatever I can find at junk shops — junk is always best.

That is actually true though. I'm sure most rockstars actually were politically correct cuckolds in the long run, but Cobain was into feminism especially. One thing rap still has that rock doesn't is good old fashioned misogyny.

>>7955660
Punk was capitalized by the corporate mainstream that they were purportedly subverting as well. That will happen once things get popular, but it doesn't mean that Nirvana was intentionally trying to get famous. Usually people who make arguments like that do so because they aren't fans of Nirvana's music, and also don't know their history. You don't need to be a fan of Nirvana to know that they weren't some "creation" by a major label, and, in fact, most things they did was in spite of their label.
Cobain had fun doing what he did, but he wasn't in it for the fame. That doesn't mean he didn't want to make money off his music, but there is a difference. Nirvana was three guys, who spend $1000 to record their first album, had a huge buzz built up in the underground scenes, and got major label interest after bootlegs of Nevermind songs were being passed around.
They went from nothing, to wildly famous very quick, with not much room for "focus groups."
However, the final version of Nevermind was re-touched by the label and ultimately out of Nirvana's control. The band hated it, and fought with the label consistently from that point forward. Despite what you want to believe, Kurt Cobain never lost track of his roots, and constantly promoted more underground bands. He would be the first to tell you about all the people he ripped off, because he was very aware of the lies within the industry.

It's easy to assume that Nirvana were some "creation," especially because most bands are, but that isn't the case. They were the right band, at the right time, with the right combination of edginess, emotion, humor, and style.

they werent the underdog, they signed with universal along with all the 'misogynist bigoted' bands they contrived themselves to despise.

i dont fault him for signing with universal, getting rich, and famous etc. nor do i think he 'sold out' but he knew what his brand was, he wasn't earnest, he was just as much a puppet as any other musician.

>With all the facts laid out, Nirvana begins to look much more like a plain old punk band that happened to exist at the heart of a cultural movement they wanted nothing to do with. Their influences-- not the classic rock roots of their Seattle brethren, but 70s post-punk and 80s college rock-- spoke to this categorization. Approximating Nirvana's sound with the time-honored [band] + [band] = [band] equation leads you to such dazzling dream-sums as Buzzcocks meets Sonic Youth, Vaselines meets Melvins, or Pixies meets Raincoats. Sure, there will always be those who insist that Nevermind was more of cultural import than musical, but they will also be full of shit: Nirvana are, a decade later, still regarded as the greatest and most legendary band of the 1990s. This band proved to a whole new generation that technical prowess has no bearing on quality, inspired their fans to seek out the music that slipped beneath the commercial radar, and then had the balls to be ridiculously, unthinkably fucking brilliant. Anyone who hates this record today is just trying to be cool, and needs to be trying harder.

The Sex Pistols are largely considered the founders of punk. They were manufactured by their label to appear more edgy to sell records. God Save the Queen wasn't originally going to be on Never Mind.... but their label basically produced it and they co-wrote it, hence the major pop influences and mainstream popularity.
>NO IT WAS THE CLASH/THE RAMONES WHO INVENTED PUNK
Both artists were extremely commercially successful. It wasn't until the 80s when bands like Black Flag created the DIY ethic that most associate with punk.

all the bands you guys consider influential are from the opinion of women.

Sid viscious was a sex symbol in the day, which sold records like how bieber and one direction sell records today

kurt cobain was a pretty boy, women liked him, much like hot the next generation were sexually attracted to n-sync and backstreet boys

all the bands you refer to, even the ramones

were lusted after by women due to their LOOKS

you like them becuase you want to associate yourself with that attraction women have in order to appear attractive/get laid
