I'm about to buy one, but I don't this to be a repeat of last time where I got one way to big that made me look hilarious.

From most pictures I've seen where the jacket looks good, including pic related, the jacket is fairly short and comes just up to the beltline and no further, and it seems fairly acceptable for any shirts underneath to extend past the length of the jacket. When I try jackets on like that with longer shirts underneath, the silhouette doesn't look as sleek and crisp, though. It just looks funny.

Also, ones that fit me well unzipped are very tight an uncomfortable when zipped up. I mean, I'd probably only wear it unzipped anyway, cuz they look better that way, but I just feel more comfortable knowing that the piece is also functional, and that I can zip it up if need be due to a nip in the air or some shit.
Are they supposed to be very tight and restricting when zipped and that's just part of the deal, or should I take the time to look for one that isn't?

Any help would be great. Thanks.

Eh, if he put that much into his OP I doubt that comment will sway him.

I'd go for comfortable, yet pretty slim. I wouldn't want to purchase something that I can't zip up comfortably tbh. It also depends on how it was designed, so obviously pick something appropriate for your body type. If you find something you like, I'd post some pictures here and maybe get it tailored to your liking, but I'm sure that ain't cheap.

I've never been interested in buying one as they don't fit my personal taste, but if I were buying one, I'd just think of it as a jacket.

I have a leather biker jacket pretty similar to the one Hedi's wearing on the pic, except mine doesn't have the epaulettes on the shoulders. Had it made at a local leatherworking shop, paid a pretty big price, but it was made by an experienced leatherworker from great materials, and to my measurements, so it fits me amazing. It fits me exactly like it fits Hedi, and when it's unzipped it fits me perfectly. I don't like wearing my jacket zipped, I don't like wearing biker jackets zipped in general, as, in my opinion, they should be worn unzipped to fully reveal the biker features - the silhouette, the biker collar, etc. Once I do zip it, it's like you said, a bit restricting and tight. But, like I said, if you want to wear a zipped jacket don't get a biker, plus you won't be wearing it in weather that requires you to zip it. Hope this helps OP.

Yes, for a leather jacket to look good it should be "too small".

A tight/cropped fit makes it look indie/hipster/punk/alt/cool/etc. whereas anything slightly roomy (or even a normal fit allowing for room to move/bend/etc.) is instantly 'autistic', as the kids on /fa/ like to call it.

I have to agree with Bandido that traditional leather jackets are fedora core and look bad most of the time. The only leather jackets that look good the majority of the time are avant garde ones.

Well, anon, ss you probably know, that is Hedi Slimane. Hedi Slimane is very partial to short and tight fitting clothing. (Look at Dior Homme stuff from 2002-2005) You probably don't want to get a jacket that fit's like Hedi's because it is rather hard to pull it off, and make the small-ness look intentional. Not to give mixed messages, but you really don't want one that looks too big either.
I'm going to stop there because I don't know what kind of leather jacket you want; do you want a biker jacket or a bomber or some other style?
I'd like you to get back to me because I have a style-fetish for leather jackets and enjoy discussing them.

I ended up getting a leather motor jacket. With the aviator lapels and all. As far as I can tell, it's not a brand name one or anything, just from this small store that happens to sell them in my town.

I really enjoy their jacket's simplicity.
All those buttons, zippers, and straps the typical black biker jackets in almost every post in the thread just seem gaudy and unnecessary - especially when it's brand new and not broken in.
I hate seeing guys in shiny-new leather biker jackets, looks absolutely shit.

A leather jacket isn’t a garment, it’s a mistake. A goofy looking mistake.

Look at anon wearing a glossy black-cowhide jacket and you can almost hear the dialogue that goes through his head: “I can’t pull off a leather jacket. Wait a minute. You know what? Screw it. I’m going to be the guy who looks good in one. Wait a minute. Does this fit right?”

You can picture him slipping it on, looking in the mirror, and thinking to himself, “Nice”. What he failed to consider is that a leather jacket makes a statement. Despite the jacket’s fit or design, the statement is not a flattering one. Leather jackets are synonymous with the movie icons of the previous century. Images of the bad boys, James Dean and Marlon Brando come to mind. Younger men, trying to sex up their image, try to emulate these movie icons. Leather jackets have, essentially, been relegated to costume wear. No matter what kind of leather jacket you wear, someone will think, “Wow, he’s trying to pull off the Marlon Brando look.” What does this mean? It means that you cannot be taken seriously when wearing a leather jacket.

I'm not, though - this message isn't something subjective any more, this is something that's inherent to the garment. It's like those autists wearing the jacket from Drive, really. Subconscious or conscious, it's there.

You really think these are 'pulling off' leather jackets?
They look terrible. You can't pull off a leather jacket, it can't be done - nobody can, and you can't in particular.
Leather jackets are terrible. A scourge on the world, to flense fuccbois in the fire and pain of looking autistic.

So like, white shirt, black or white shoes, and black or faded blue jeans.
