op here, real talk, the fuck is up with that? I pretty much only wear black jeans because idk, indigo just looks kinda garden variety a lot of the time, but re quality the black denim never even holds a candle to top end indigo denim - Like my hinoya iron hearts feel great, but you compare them to my samurais and they are just worlds apart. Why does nobody make high quality black denim? Like its literally just regular denim with the warp and weft dyed black right?

>>7766409
Yeah this is legit, it's just a mark of quality that's all. But I've never seen non-selvedge indigo denim that didn't look like shit next to even the most basic selvedge pair

i only kind of agree with this. I feel like the fade hype is blown way up, most fades just look fucking bad and not like 'wow that is some battle hardened denim' and more just like 'wow you look poor as hell'. Some fades look dope as hell, i think it's split right down the middle really.
I barely soak my samurais and I do everything I can to preserve the indigo, the fades end up way more subtle if youre actively avoiding it and idk, it just looks better imo if youre not trying to blast all the indigo out of your jeans the day you get them

So selvedge is the term for an edge that is naturally finished by the loom (self edge). Shuttle looms are the only looms that create this self edge because they use one continuous cross thread. Shuttle looms generally weave a tighter and more durable denim and are thus prized for the better constructed jeans they produce. I'm not sure I see why the selvedge edge itself is any better, since you rarely see non selvedge edges deteriorating on decent jeans.

1. they're relatively cheap (in europe at least, can't say for USA)
2. they are higher quality than say levis
3. they have a lot of different cuts
4. the crotch blowout issue seems to be exaggerated, unless you sized down extremely hard

I bought them because I wanted to try out a pair of raw denim while im cutting weight (and waist size) so I didn't want to spend a ton of money

the investment helped me to learn understand sizing, cuts and weight/fabric and I recommend every raw denim beginner to try out a cheap(er) pair at first

Hold off on washing unless you spilled something on them and can't wipe it all off, or is they start to smell. Don't bother with the freezer thing it doesn't actually work.

Put your jeans in your bathub inside out. Fill the tub with lukewarm water and put a small amount of Woolite Dark, agitate the jeans a little and then let it soak for an hour. Then rinse the jeans off and flip right side out. hang dry.

I never pay more than ~50€ for my 501s shipped to (or within) Europe.

I believe the selvedge 501s belong to the Levis Vintage line which is also a lot more expensive. I think they are raw too.

I would still love to find a pair of non-raw selvedge but for the price I will keep my 501s.
