Comme des Garcons as a whole stands in a "Punk" stance against stereotypes, gender roles, social / cultural standards.

>Comme des Garcons

Mainline Womenswear, biggest pillar of the empire

>Comme des Garcons Comme des Garcons / Comme Comme, "Cutesier" and more Japanese womenswear line, collections seem to carry common themes

>Homme

First Menswear line, now designed by Junya

>Homme Plus

Main menswear presented in Paris

>Homme Plus Evergreen

Like Margiela's Replicas, reiterations of pieces from past collections

>Homme Deux

CdG's take on the business suit, started as an initiative to showcase "Japanese Style" to the rest of the world, targeted an older audience

>Shirt

Shirts, now expanded to somewhat simple (in comparison to mainline) shirts, hats, pants

>Play

Collab with Filip Pagowski, "bankroll" line, what most people know cdg for

>Black

launched in 2009 / 2010 as an emergency line directed towards a new younger audience after the global economic crisis, was very successful and stayed as an independant line in itself, lower priced black dominated pieces. started as womenswear, now has menswear as well i think

>robe de chambre

started as a housewear line for women, expanded into outerwear. made in italy, cheaper because no export tax to enter the european market. discontinued.

>Tao

Tao Kurihara, another main designer under the cdg umbrella, launched 2006 as independant collections in paris, discontinued 2011 as tao wanted to focus on family life

>Tricot

originally designed by junya, passed to tao today. womenswear knits.

>Ganryu

Designed by Futomi Ganryu, references "pop", "youth", "avant garde".

Other than these and Junya's Junya Watanabe Comme des Garcons / Man, there were alot of unsuccessful or short lines / collaborations like Edited, JWCdGM Pink, CdGh+ Sport, Noir. I think alot of these might still exist in Japan but I've never seen them being sold outside of Japan.

Newest designer from the CdG umbrella is Kei Nonimiya

"I haven't yet made clothes that I have been totally satisfied with and maybe I never will. It is clear to me that designing creatively becomes harder. But I have to continue, I don't believe I have achieved all I can yet." - Rei

It's really fucking crazy when you think about it, the brand has come such a long way and tried so many things that now Rei feels like she has to make things that aren't even supposed to be clothes (SS14). Isn't that the point of skirts? Even if it's cut too short, I think your idea of a cheap whore is different than mine. We can't do anything about that.

Don't know how you deduced that from less than half of the picture, but okay.

So you're telling me she wore loud colors because she put on neon shoes. If we took the shoe out of the equation, would you still say she's wearing loud colors? I mean there's nothing loud about a white tee and a floral patterened skirt on a summer's day.

I agree that much of the hate on /fa/ is just people being contrarian. You don't buy PLAY expecting it to be a shredded, deconstructed, zipper-covered whatever that you'd get from mainline. You buy it for basics and for simple sportswear things that you can just fold into any wardrobe. Complaining that PLAY is a watered down version of Homme + or something completely misses the point of what PLAY is supposed to be.

One of the great things about the CdG brand universe is that each brand does its own thing with its own rhyme and reason. There's no need to rank them or rate them because nobody in the CdG company thinks of their constellation of products like that anyway.

>> No.7753695

>>7753671

Fragrances are very much a take it or leave it proposition. You're either into the very aggressive, very non-traditional scent profiles that the company favors of you aren't. It's polarizing, but that's kind of the point: fragrances for people who don't like standard fragrances.

If anything, the fact that you're turned off by it is proof positive that the people making the fragrances know their customer and are producing scents specifically for that customer and no one else.

Well, let's be honest that there's a lot of not-so-basic stuff in PLAY, too. The Matt Groening stuff, the Beatles/Apple stuff, etc. I meant basic in terms of construction and silhouette.

I can see how the logo can be a turn-off, but given that it's the only overtly branded product in the entire CdG world, I think it's safe to say they approach it differently. It's not a luxury symbol and its origin within Filip Pagowski's existing oeuvre (pre-dating PLAY) gives credence to the idea that it's not just branded for the sake of branding. Also, given how often they tweak the logo (blowing it up, obscuring it, multiplying it), it's much more interesting work than what most other brands ever choose to with their branding and identity.

And? It doesn't matter because it's still too overbranded to be a legitimate basic at that point anymore. It's just a shitty graphic 'xyz' now.
Hating CDG for PLAY is stupid. Hating PLAY is not stupid.

>> No.7753846

CDG mens has always been irrelevant to me aside from a couple of iconic pieces like their drop crotch shorts and wrinkled polyester jackets.

what people don't understand is that these arent independent companies, not everything you see is exactly what rei kawakubo or junya watanabe or the people you know from cdg have anything to do with whatsoever.

when rei started the line at least, it was intended to be the opposite of sexy. fashion has completely changed, and their diffusion lines are there simply to make them some money.

if you've never even seen anything pre-1990s, you dont deserve to talk about comme des garcons. period. im tired of everyone on /fa/ making themselves an expert when they only know fashion from instagram and online shopping

a good chunk of CDG Play stuff has understated branding, but I agree that the branding can go overboard sometimes.

For me, branding can look good, but only if the logo is attractive to begin with. CDG Play, Supreme, and Rick Owens come to mind when I think of cool logos, although Ricks logo is never put on clothing.

Well, as I mentioned earlier, the logo is an outgrowth of Pagowski's work, so I think that's a bit of a moot point. I never said that it's "wrong" to hate on PLAY, I just think that a lot of it is people being contrary because they think that snobbery and taste are the same thing.
