i'm only going to speak to numbers 3 and 4, but the school i'm at is very focused on academics and being in a frat/sorority is definitely not "highly desirable". we have both, and plenty of people are in them, but nobody cares if you are, either positively or negatively. nobody, and i mean nobody, would fuck somebody just because they were in a certain frat. that being said, i've heard stories from friends at state schools about that being the case - one friend was making out with a girl at a party, and then she stopped and asked him if he was in a specific frat. when he said no, she said "oh sorry, i can only sleep with guys in [specific frat]." so maybe my school is an anomaly.

1. around here, most fraternity dudes don't wear gay ass pastels. they're usually khakis/navi shorts and very unassuming colored oxfords/polos (think church clothes)

2. it's not ironic. they aren't alpha males. there may be men in the group that are alpha, but being in the group does not qualify one as alpha. most fraternities have a dress code that requires chino shorts, chino pants, non-carpenter blue jeans in good condition (no holes or pre-distressed/stained shit), ralph-lauren-style polo shirts (not necessary ralph lauren, but similar style, and probably not super-tight fitting styles), or button-down oxford shirts. the dress code is usually for new pledge member, but older members will probably adhere to the style because of social pressure and what-have-you (people tend to dress like their peers)

4. some areas of the united states are almost entirely 'greek'. that is to say that almost everyone at that university is a member of a fraternity or sorority. that said, these organizations vary wildly and a person will join the one that suits him/her best. these organizations are often very diverse in nature and the discussion in this thread is only focusing on a certain generalization of them.

OP, you don't have to go out of your comfort zone or make your own style or anything fun and scary like that. All you have to do is wear clothes that fit a little better, and base your frat attire off of actual prep attire as opposed to the bastardized prep that you wear. Go find a tailor, first step.
