Wtf are you talking about? Moc toes? They have been around forever. I remember as a kid my dad used to wear pair of some random brand moc toe ankle boots always. Reason I remember is that me and my bro used to hide them and dad would go around yelling where the hell are his boots.

Red Wings are very low quality and should be avoided. The brand is just riding the workwear fad wave. People aren't going to give two shits about Red Wing in one or two years. Again, I should say that the quality is lacking. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

this reminds me of one time, when mark mcguire and sammy sosa were battling for the record bats, my dad was outside painting the house when one of the games was on and we kept running out and telling him mark hit another one (even though the cardinals were on d) so he'd run in from outside to see the replay. we thought that shit was hilarious.

And OP, Red Wings are fine. Not the best, but you'll be hard-pressed to find better in the $200-400 range. Especially if you're into high-quality leather. Yuketen is another good option in that price range, but I'd recommend buying them on sale.

red wing are not "low quality"

they're not the pinnacle of fashion, and they're not actually shoes for working in,

but they're reasonably durable, the materials used are alright, there's nothing really 'wrong' with them from a quality perspective

oh, and thorogoods look like shit by comparison, IMO

if you think red wings look cool then there's nothing that should stop you from getting a pair

just be aware that you might run into a lot of people wearing the exact same pair of boots if you get the 8138

I second this question. Should I go with these? Or just stick with Alden?
I like the idea of sticking with a Canadian manufacturer tho, so even some Yuke's could be on the table.

What do you think hip$ter?

>> No.7728488

>>7726662
Actually that's not really true.

TL;DR RW's is better quality

Leather quality? Well, Wolverine's getting a lot of flak because they choose the cheap, damaged part of the leather to make boots to save money - most other makers discard that part and are more selective.

Secondly, Wolverine 1k's don't use a real leather insole. They use leather wrapped fiberboard. This type of inner sole does not last as long as a real leather insole.

RW's heritage line, which use leather from RW's own tannery (and thus they're more in control of leather QC) AND use real leather insoles, are in fact better made than wolverines.

>> No.7728494

>>7726987
>as far as I'm aware that's just not true -- the heritage line is all made in the US.
Yes, RW's actual work boot line is a mix of China, US+imported, and full US made.

But their fashion oriented Heritage line is all USA and uses leather from their own tannery.

Not many bootmakers/shoesmakers out there can boast of having their own leather tannery.

Because Grenson has had to whore itself out to mainstream fashion stores in recent years because no one will touch their boots since it was exposed that their boots are made in India and only finished in england, no matter what line and where they claim to have made them.

This outsourcing lead to a dramatic decline in quality and generated much ill-will amongst those that had traditionally bought their shoes.

Because people inclined to buy fashiony shoes and boots have no idea about this, nor would they see grenson's quality faults for what they are, grenson have found a niche in that kind of market.

The boots were no where near worth 500, that's just marketing, 200 is closer to their true pricing.

Do not pay very much for grenson shoes; there are shoes really made in england by top notch makers for 500 (and even less) that are better than grenson.

Red Wings are a durable all purpose boot OP.
They are made tough and sturdy and they are meant to get beat up.
You can take them anywhere from hiking or just fucking around in the snow and they will keep your feet nice and dry.
Personally I think they look decent with a pair of jeans, but that's up to you.
They should be around $200 and to me it's a good cop.

>> No.7729666

>>7729654
Nobody in their right mind would take a pair of Red Wings hiking. Sure, you can do it, but why not just use a pair of hiking boots built for the task rather than your nice smooth leathers that will scuff, dent, and wear after one sizable hike?

>> No.7729829

>>7729666
This.

If that other anon were talking about rw's more utilitarian work boot line then yeah; the heritage line is a work-styled fashiony boot - today there are better boots for work and and hiking etc.

No worker, hiker, or anyone else wears the heritage line for anything but leisure, and certainly not for when a dedicated work boot is necessary.

well, it depends on how badly you want to get some "character" on your red wings, and how well they fit your feet, and how serious you are about hiking

I could see someone hiking in them and enjoying it under specific conditions

but you certainly shouldn't buy them for that, they're not hiking boots, I agree

>>7728522
yeah, I wouldn't touch Grenson unless you get them for like 200ish or less

they're still a lot better than the real shit brands like h by hudson but they certainly aren't competing with alden or tricker's

I got some grenson shoes recently but they were like $100

>>7727170
I don't have any experience with Viberg

Alden are really nice though, I can't complain about their boots

the canadian-made yukes (made by Dayton) are nice if you get a sale (300 or less) but idk if I'd say they're as nice as Alden. they're stylistically more interesting tho
