But look up Terrance Renati - Rock Hard (or something along those lines), which has a very strong hold which makes it less painful making a nice looking hairstyle when your hair gets long. I recommend it.

I use matt clay.
When i hop out of the shower i blow dry my hair while combing it into the rough position, apply this to my hair and blow dry again. I feel like the second time i blow dry it melts the clay and allows me to style it easier then it cools and dries in place.

hair is a bit below shoulders.

well, technically I had dreads from late 2011 to mid 2013. combed that shit out with hot water and a bunch of conditioner. still have shoulder+ length hair and haven't used shampoo since 2011. it doesn't smell bad, it just smells like hair. right after combing out the dreads, though, it was kind of yuckie. boiling water and conditioner to get all the oils out, and then brush brush brush and since then, water + lemonjuice and honey every two or three weeks, with an occasional vinegar rinse.

My hair feels very good, overall. Invest in a bristle boar brush, it works wonders with the natural sebum of your hair. If I cut it I would be able to make the sickest hairdos.
