yeah, it does matter, a lot. any other shoe people try to say is similar is actually so different it may as well be a completely different shoe. the fact that it has no defining characteristics is what makes it unique on the current market. its the same issue with backpacks and so many other products. for example, you cant get a quality backpack that doesn't have all the stupid piping, mesh, paneling, branding, and other unnecessary details without paying a premium. good design is a rare commodity and one should expect to pay for it. before anyone suggests jansport those backpacks are too small, theyre made of thin polyester and the straps are insubstantial, and the adjusting hardware is plastic. same here with sneakers

this is the tripe that often accompanies shoes people think is comparable to common projects. vans authentics and white chuck taylors are not in the same league. people who say they are the same also clearly never have worn/handled common projects. the difference between achilles and a low top chuck taylor is obvious. if it was really a bandwagon common projects would have died in 2004 when the brand launched. instead it has only gained in popularity and no other brands/designers have offered them any substantial competition. they have a monopoly.

Leather quality, proportion, lack of overt branding, stitched soles, comfort, etc. Part of the point is that they're made with a higher level of care and attention that people typically associate with simple sneakers, which is the same logic behind people who like Sunspel tees and Hammerthor underwear and whatnot. Simple, but not for lack of attention to detail.

And if you compare it to similarly styled shoes from Kent Wang (which is the usual "lower price" analogue that people bring up), photos of them after wear show that there is a difference.
