The key point here is that things look better the longer you look at them (ie your face)

So if you look in the mirror every day, you're gonna be startled when you look at a picture of yourself that hasn't been reversed because you're not used to it.

When other people look at you, especially people who know you, they see you pretty much how you look in the mirror because they're used to the way you look, and small asymmetries aren't noticed.

That said, if they were to stand next to you and look at your face in the mirror, it would look weird to them, because they are used to seeing you normally.
